My Love of Traveling by Sam Harris
I grew up in Australia and was introduced to traveling at an early age. We moved
around a lot because of my father’s work. My main hobby was radios - I repaired
old sets and listened to various programs from around the world. I had a map of
the world on my bedroom wall with pins on it and I wrote postcards to
foreign radio stations. I was an only child and I didn't have many friends; instead
I tried to contact the outside world. We didn't have a television, so what I
learned came from the radio and from encyclopedias. By the age of 13, I could
draw maps of countries from memory and name all the capital cities.
I didn't actually leave Australia until I was twenty-five, when I went on a long trip
through Asia. I arrived in Thailand thinking I was well prepared, but in fact, I
knew little about its rich culture. Then I went to India, where my taste for
adventure and different experiences grew. Every city there was different; there
were cows on the streets, old cars interesting food and people everywhere.
I went from country to country without realizing how dangerous some of them
were at the time. There was very little advice available. But now it's different -
you can learn so much from the internet and just about everywhere you go,
you'll find an internet cafe. It’s really changed the way people travel.
The things I now like most about a trip are eating and shopping. I also love
sitting on trains and talking to different people. I’m sure I'll never get bored with
traveling, even though I've explored most countries in the world

In 1957, an engineering company started studying the possibility to join Britain and
France through a tunnel under the sea. It would have two trains for passengers as
well as a small service train. In 1973 the ideas went into action and the hard work
began. A short time later, they were stopped because there wasn’t enough money
to complete the project.
In 1984, several companies showed their ideas to re-start the project: two variations
of railway, a road and a big bridge over the English Channel. The chosen project
was the railway solution that was very similar to the one presented back in 1973.
This time with help from both the British and French, a private company began the
construction.
On January 20th 1986, the company TransMancheLink (TML) said that a long tunnel
would be constructed. They chose a route from Folkestone in England to Calais in
France. This wasn’t the shortest possible way and the company needed to work
harder than 13 years before.
It took seven years to complete the Eurotunnel and about 13,000 people worked on it.
The two ends of the smallest platform met on December 1st 1990 and lots of journalists
and photographers went to the opening ceremony. Later, in 1991 the two long trains
met. The hard work continued and three years later the project was completed.

I play the trumpet in my school jazz band. Last month we held a jazz competition with bands from local high schools
– and our band won!
Each band had their own costumes, ranging from black school uniforms like my band wore, to brightly-coloured T-
shirts. We didn’t look much like adult professional bands, but all of us were used to performing in competitions, so
the quality of playing was amazing, especially considering everyone was so young. Players from each band even
created new tunes right there on stage. It was exciting to watch – but even better when my band played on stage!
We have a great jazz band at my school, but not everyone who wants to play in it gets accepted – only about half, in
fact. But anyone who’s keen to play goes to jazz practice before school, and we often spend time together after
school, listening to jazz and learning its language. There are also trips to jazz summer camps across the country –
I’ve been to a couple and learnt a lot.
Adults are often surprised that young people are getting interested in jazz. My music teacher thinks it’s because pop
music isn’t challenging enough for people like me who are serious about music. But I find it exciting because it’s
both new and old at the same time – you can create your own music, but you also feel you’re part of its history, as
you’re playing on stage in the same way as great jazz performers before you.
My school’s really lucky because we have great teachers, and parents who’ve supported us all the way. Without
them, we’d never get anywhere with our music!

                                   A BOOK I RECOMMEND
I found Escape from Time by Andy Treen very exciting and I really (0) .............. reading it. It's a story
(1) .............. a boy called Troy who goes on a journey to (2) .............. for his friend Zyra. It wasn't what
I had expected, although I am interested (3) .............. science fiction. I thought this story would be like
films I had seen, but I (4) .............. after a few pages that it was (5) .............. interesting than a film.
Troy goes to many places and times. He (6) .............. his knowledge with different
(7) .............. of people and learns new skills from them. Then he moves on. The last part of the book
(8) ..............the meeting between Troy and Zyra when they are both caught by some space criminals
from the future. But that's enough information from me (9) ..............I don't want to spoil it for you.
It's really quite (10) .............. , too, with some excellent jokes about time travel in it.
                           Fashions go around and round
Fashions have always changed with time. No (0) .............. Roman girls worried about having the
latest hairstyle and boys in Ancient Egypt wanted to have sandals (1) ..............were cool and not the
sensible ones their mothers preferred
Looking (2) .............. over recent times, there seem to be two main differences in the (3) ..............
fashions have changed compared to earlier times. Firstly, (4) .............. more people have a choice of
clothes available to them. There are few places (5) .............. the world where the trainers, the caps or
the T-shirts of teenagers do not change from one year to the next. Secondly, styles are (6) ..............
within a much shorter time than they (7) ..............to be. For instance, in the 1960’s, (8) ..............had
the same low waists and narrow skirts as forty years before.
In the early year of the 21st century, the shops are (9) .............. of long skirts and colored scarves like
the ones in fashion only thirty years before. Soon, we will find that the really fashionable people
look no different from the (10) .............. of us, because it is only ten years since their clothes were in
fashion before!

.
Many people are increasingly thirsty for what is considered the healthiest, and often
most expensive, water on the grocery shelf. However, instead of consuming four billion
gallons of bottled water a year, we need to start thinking about what all those bottles
are doing to the planet.
Water bottles, made from natural gas and petroleum, are bad for the environment
because their production wastes valuables resources. The Earth Policy Institute in the US
has calculated that it takes about 1.5 million barrels of oil to make the water bottles
Americans use each year. And unfortunately, only about 23 percent of bottles are used
again.
In fact, bottled water isn't necessary because most municipal water is so good that
nobody needs to imports a single bottle. Drinking eight glasses of bottled water a day
could cost up to $1,400 annually. The same amount of tap water would cost about 49
cents.
Another serious problem is that the more bottled people drink, the less political support
there will be for maintaining public water supplies. Access to cheap, clean water is basic
to a country's health.
Some local governments in the US have begun to fight back. Recently, San Francisco s
Mayor prohibited his city's departments and agencies from buying bottled water.
Likewise, a similar order has been given in Salt Lake City. The real change, though, will
come when millions of people realize that they can save money and the planet, if they
only stop drinking bottled water and turn on the tap.
People should be aware that the country has some of the best public water supplies in
the world.
