1. Sara is observing a snail in her aquarium. She noted that in the morning it
crawled 1 inch up the glass. A few hours later it crawled another 2 inch up
the glass. Later, it crawled 4 inch down the glass. How far is the snail
from where it started? Ans: 1 inch below where it started.
2. Harry and his sister go to the fair. Harry has Rs. 30 with him. He pays Rs
10 at the entrance for tickets, but fails to notice that Rs. 15 falls out of his
wallet while he is paying. His sister lends him Rs. 10 so that he can still
enjoy the fair. Write the mathematical expression of Harry’s net wealth
position throughout the fair. Ans: 30 - 10 = 20, 20-15 = 5, 5+10 = 15

3. Karan opens a credit account in a bank to purchase a new bed.


He makes a down payment of Rs. 2000 on a Rs. 10,000 bed. He
also pays Rs. 3000 for bedsheets and cover and another Rs.
4000 for pillows. What is his financial situation with the bank?
Ans: He owes the bank Rs. 9000  

4. Some number added to 5 is equal to -11. Find the number. Ans: -16

5. During one week, the Bombay stock market did the


following: Monday rose 18 points, Tuesday rose 31 points,
Wednesday dropped 5 points, Thursday rose 27 points and
Friday dropped 38 points. If it started out at 1,196 on
Monday, what did it end up on Friday? Ans: 1,229 points

6. Some number added to -11 is 37. Divide this number by -12. Then,
multiply by -8. What is the final number? Ans: + 32

7. A marine biologist wants to know the total vertical distance a dolphin traveled
during a jump. With the surface of the water being zero, it started under water at -
35 feet, jumped up and out of the water to 27 feet, and returned to the water to
swim at -18 feet. What is the total vertical distance the dolphin traveled? 80 feet

8. A group of hikers is descending the mountain at a rate of 600 feet per hour. What
is the change in elevation of hiker after 6 hours? -3600

9. In a test (+6) marks are given for every correct answer and (-3) marks are given
for every incorrect answer and 0 for answer not attempted. Ramesh gets 5 correct
and 8 incorrect out of 13 questions he attempted. What is his score?6

a. Find the product using suitable properties:
i) 25 x (-42) + (-42) x (-35) = 420
ii) 25 x (-76) x 4= -7600
iii) -35 x (42) + (-42) x (65) = -4200
iv) 225 x (-15) = -3375
v) -193 x (19) =-3667

15. In a true and false test, consisting of 50 questions, (+2) marks were awarded for
every correct answer and (– 2) for every wrong answer. Roohi attempted all the
questions and got 86 marks. How many questions did she attempted correct and
how many were wrong?
Solution: Roohi got 86 marks, if Roohi had attempted all questions correct , she
would have got 100 marks ( 50X2)
Marks lost= 100 – 86= 14
Marks for every wrong answer =-2
This means roohi attempted 7 questions wrong
86 /2 0r 50-7 =43 questions correct.
