CSS10 Week6

The document provides an overview of operating systems (OS) and drivers for JHS learners. It defines an OS as software that communicates with hardware and allows other programs to run. It lists some common computer OS like Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, and Android. It then defines drivers as software that enables specific hardware devices to work with an OS. Drivers may be required for internal and external components. The document emphasizes the importance of regularly updating OS and drivers according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Day 1

Hello! Are you all set to learn? This week 5, you

will be on access OS and drivers
updates/patches but, have you heard about
OS and drivers? If not, then sit back and relax
as I take you to a ride of fun-learning.

An operating system, or "OS," is software that

communicates with the hardware and allows
other programs to run. It is comprised of system
software, or the fundamental files your
computer needs to boot up and function. Every
desktop computer, tablet, and smartphone
includes an operating system that provides
basic functionality for the device.

computer operating systems

• Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows is the most common and used operating system on

computers today, with Microsoft Windows 10 being the most recently
released version of Windows. The operating system is used PC and IBM
compatible computers.

• Apple macOS

With Apple computers, macOS is the primary operating system used with
Apple desktop and laptop computers.

• Linux

Linux is a free and open source operating system used with PC and IBM
compatible computers. Because the operating system is open source, it is
used to create many variants of Linux, including Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat,
and Slackware. See our Linux page for a full listing of variants listed on our
site with further information about the operating system.

1
• Chromium / Chrome OS

Chrome OS is an operating system used with Google Chromebooks.

Mobile operating systems

• Android

Android in an operating system used with smartphones and tablets. Today,

Android is the most popular operating system worldwide because of how
many smartphones use a variant of the Android operating system.

• Apple iOS

The Apple iOS operating system used is the operating system used with the
Apple iPhone and iPads.

Day 2

A driver, or device driver, is a software

program that enables a specific hardware
device to work with a computer's operating
system.

Drivers may be required for internal

components, such as video cards and optical
media drives, as well as external peripherals,
such as printers and monitors.

Most modern hardware is "plug and play,"

meaning the devices will work without
requiring driver installation. However, even if a
hardware device is recognized by the
operating system, installing the correct drivers
may provide additional options and
functionality for the device.

For example
• Suppose an application needs to read some data from a device.
• The application calls a function implemented by the operating
system, and the operating system calls a function implemented by
the driver.
• The driver, which was written by the same company that designed
and manufactured the device, knows how to communicate with the
device hardware to get the data.
• After the driver gets the data from the device, it returns the data to
the operating system, which returns it to the application.

4
Examples of plug and play devices
• USB flash drive

Today, there are many different plug and play devices available for
computers. Below is a list of some of the more common ones.

Computer monitor External hard drive

Gamepad or joystick Keyboard

Mouse Webcam

Day 3

When new versions of operating systems

are launched, such as Microsoft Windows,
Apple OS X / iOS or Android, they are
generally accompanied by improved
usability, additional features and an
enhanced user experience.

However, cybercriminals quickly find

vulnerable areas in the new operating system
and continue to do so for the lifetime of the
version. To counter this, the software
companies release regular updates –such as
security updates or critical updates which
protect against malware and security exploits.

Other types of updates correct errors or

enhance functionality within the operating
system, and are not necessarily security
related. They also detect which of their
manufacturers’ other programs you are
running on your device and provide updates
to these as well.

The risks

Not keeping your operating system up to date can result in serious issues,
affecting both your device and your own personal security. These include:

• Viruses, spyware and other malware.

• Cybercrime attacks.
• Crashing, freezing and generally poor performance.

Steps in Updating your operating system

Windows Computers

To ensure that the latest Windows updates are downloaded and installed
automatically, you should check that your computer is set up as follows:

Windows 8 & 10
From the Start menu, click 'Control Panel'. Select 'Windows Update',
and then click 'Install optional updates'. In the left pane, 'click Change

7
settings'. Under Important updates, choose the option that you want. Under
'Recommended updates', select the 'Give me recommended updates the
same way I receive important updates' check box, and then click 'OK.'
You may be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.

Windows 7
From the Start menu, click ‘Control Panel’. Select ‘System and Security’,
then click ‘Turn automatic updating on or off’ (under Windows Update).
Ensure ‘Install updates automatically (recommended)’ is selected.

When Windows downloads have been downloaded, it will be indicated to

you that they are available. You should re-boot your computer to install
them (after which the display will show how many updates have been
applied out of the total) – or if your computer is locked, it will automatically
power down and you will have to start it up to install the updates. Do not
interrupt updates by unplugging or restarting the computer.

5. What issue does the user encounter of having an outdated operating

system?
A. Freezing B. Crashing C. Poor performance D. all of the above

Day 4

Updating drivers is also a great troubleshooting

step when the device is having some kind of
problem or is generating an error, like a Device
Manager error code.

A driver update isn't always a fix-it task, either.

An updated driver might enable new features
for the hardware, something we see on a
regular basis with popular video cards and
sound cards.

It usually takes around 15 minutes to update a

driver in Windows, even less time if the driver is
self-installable or you get it via Windows Update
(more on all of that below).

How to update drivers on Windows 10 using

Windows Update

To quickly update device drivers using Windows Update, use these steps:

1. Open Settings.
2. Click on Update & Security.
3. Click on Windows Update
4. Click the Check for updates button (if applicable).
5. Click the View optional updates option.

10
6. Click the Driver updates tab.

7. Select the driver you want to update.

11
8. Click the Download and install button.
9.

Once you complete the steps, the newer driver will download and install
automatically on your device.

If the "View optional updates" link is not available after checking for
updates, then Windows Update doesn't have any new drivers or any
update for other products at that particular time.
