I like travelling because it (1)..................................... my outlook and helps

me to understand other cultures. I think that I’m already an experienced traveller.
First of all, everything should be well planned. I’m not an adult yet so I travel
with my parents. This year we decided to go to Britain. At first we went to a
(2).................................................. that helped us to arrange our journey. They
(3).............................................. for us an (4)..................................... in a British
hotel and booked us a (5)......................................... ticket. Then we packed our
(6) ................................... and (7) .................................... at the airport. We stayed
in a small hotel near London. It offered us a wide range of different activities:
(8)........................................... and (9)......................................... for those who

who want to get to remote places and are fond of scenic routes. Those who want
(12)..................................... their holiday but (13)................................. can buy a
(14)................................. which is a cheap way to see almost everything.
5. Work in pairs. You and your friend are discussing the best way of
spending your summer holidays. You would like to have holidays with
difference and go abroad. But your friend thinks you’ll get the best of
your holidays if you stay in your own country. Discuss the pros and cons
of going abroad and come to an agreement.

CAREERS
IN TOURISM
The idea of travel is a glamorous one. When you think of
1UNIT
travel, you may picture yourself sipping café au lait in a Parisian
sidewalk café. You may imagine going on safari in Africa or a
more realistic one of travelling on a family holidays. Whatever
your travel fantasy is, however, it probably doesn’t include some
important details – like how you’re going to get there, where
you’re going to stay, finding the best price on airfare and car rent-
al, or how your money converts to the local currency. Even though
these details may not be included in your travel fantasy, they are
nonetheless essential elements of any trip.
The individuals we rely on to handle these details and to get
us comfortably from point A to point B are those who work in
the travel and tourism industry. There are thousands of people
working just to help travellers plan their trips. These individuals
check fares, book seats on airplanes, reserve rental cars and ho-
tel rooms, and provide information on planned destinations – but
they have nothing to do with the actual trip itself. These are the
people working in the planning division.
Workers in the execution division actually deal with travel-
lers while they are on their trips. They are the pilots who fly the
airplanes, the flight attendants who seat and serve air travellers,
and the tour guides who oversee groups of travellers. They are the
concierges in hotels who give tips on hot destinations, the execu-
tive housekeepers who provide you with a clean and comfortable
room, and the restaurant managers who make sure you have a
good meal at the start or end of your exciting holiday or business
day. Many jobs in the execution division require you to be very
mobile.
If you are considering a career in travel and tourism you must
realize that the better informed you are from the start, the bet-
ter your chances are of having a successful and satisfying career.
Depending upon your personal desires and needs, you can pursue
a travel and tourism job that turns you into a world traveller or
one that lets you come home for dinner every night. The choice is
yours. No one is going to take you by the hand and lead you in the
“right” direction. It’s up to you. It’s your life. You can do some-
thing about it right now!

Lesson 3.
Job Interviews
1. Read the text. Get some information to give advice to your friend who is
going to be interviewed.
Interview is an occasion when a person is asked questions by one or more
people to decide whether he or she is a suitable person to be given a job. So,
remember, that any employer is taking a risk when hiring someone. That’s why
candidates have to be able to sell themselves. Your appearance and manners are
really meaningful. A candidate should also know who is interviewing him. For
example, a potential boss would be interested in your professional skills and
knowledge. And a human resources manager would like to hear more general in-
formation without specific words and topics. In most cases it’s really so. Besides,
you should be active – show interest and ask questions. Don’t be nervous, just
relax, slow down and answer the questions.
Read the questions, write answers and go over them just before you go into
the interview.
• What do I do well?
• What are my good points?
• Why would I like this job?
• Hobbies? Interests?
• What do I like doing and why?
• What do I not like doing and why?
• School activities? School subjects?
• Previous job?
• Part-time work?
You will want to ask more questions:
• The job itself?
• Training?
• Prospects for advancement?
• Educational opportunities?
• Can I see where I would be working?
• Hours?
• Money?
• Conditions?

Dress Your Best When Interviewing
Does it really make a difference how you dress for an interview? In many
cases, it does. I’ll never forget the gentleman I interviewed for an accounting
position. He had been out of work for a few months and wanted to show me why.
He took off his jacket, unbuttoned his shirt and started to pull down his pants
(this is a true story) to show me the scar from a boat propeller that had injured
him. He didn’t get the job. Neither did the young lady in a bright red skirt so
short and tight that she could hardly sit down!
In the conservative business climate I worked in at the time, appearances did
matter. In other environments it isn’t as important. However, it does make sense
to dress your best for the interview, regardless of the dress code at the organiza-
tion. If you’re in doubt about how to dress for an interview, it is better to err on
the side of conservatism. It is much better to be overdressed than underdressed
(or undressed). If you’re not sure, check with the person who scheduled the in-
terview and ask.
According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, 55% of another person’s per-
ception of you is based on how you look. Her Dressing for Success information

money. Here’s a quick look at the basics:

questions. Look at the list of the questions you might be asked at the

7. Don’t you think you are a little young/old for this job?
8. Why do you think that you fit this position?
9. After the interview you have to write a thank-you letter.
A. Read the text.
The number one etiquette tip for applicants is writing a thank-you letter. This
is not a tool commonly used by job seekers right now. If you are looking for
an advantage and a way to stick out above the other job applicants then follow
up your interview by showing appreciation and courtesy. The letter should be
written and sent within 24 hours after your interview and sent to all people who
either interviewed you or helped you out in the process. If it is not appropriate to
send a letter to everyone who was involved with your interview, then just send
one to the highest-ranking interviewer. Writing to the employer is another way to
showcase skills and competency in communication and your career. Make sure
your letter is understandable, easy to read and professional yet personal. Now
that you have met the person or people you are writing to it is okay to include
some personalization. The letter format should include the following:
1) express your sincere appreciation for the interview;
2) reemphasize your best qualifications for the position requirements;
3) reiterate your enthusiasm and interest in the job. At this time you may
want to offer additional information not previously given;
4) once again mention your appreciation.

Dear Mr Henley,
I would like to thank you for the chance to be interviewed for the assis-
