COMPETENCIES
At the end of the 60- minute discussion, the students of 10-Ibañez are expected to
do the following with at least 85% level of accuracy and proficiency:

A. Define a Technical Definition and Operational Definition,

I. OBJECTIVES
B. Determine the purpose of giving Technical and Operational definitions,
and
C. Identify the difference between Technical Definition and Operational

III. PROCEDURE
Good morning, 10-Ibañez. How are you today? Have you already eaten your
breakfast? Always remember to eat breakfast because breakfast is the most
important meal of the day.

Before we begin our discussion, let me just remind everyone about the
A. DAILY ROUTINE
netiquettes so that we will be guided with our synchronous class today. [Teacher
presents netiquettes to students]

Are all the instructions clear, class? Let me see thumbs up reactions. Okay,
before we start our discussion, let us first exercise our minds with a quick game.
B. LESSON PROPER:
Motivation The game that we are going to play is called “I know what you’re talking about”. In
this game, I will be showing you definitions of items, concepts or ideas and you
will guess what is it that is being defined. The items, concepts and ideas are those
that are relatable to you. Are you ready for our activity class? Let me see heart
reactions.
Example: An instrument that records, summarized and analyzes text that is
published for educational purposes, entertainment and leisure and is usually used
for reading. Answer: Book/s
Very good, class! You seem to really know what is asked in the definitions.
Moving on, Let’s have another game. This time, you are going to define or give
the definition of the pictures or words that I will be flashing on the screen. It is just
the opposite of what we did earlier. Is everybody ready, class? Let me see
thumbs up reactions. Okay, let’s proceed.
Example:
ACTIVITY

from point A to point B

screen and I also asked you to give the meaning of the object/word that is being
shown on the screen. What do you call the act of giving meaning to an object,
place or an idea? (To define, sir)

Very good! How about the statement that gives the meaning of a term? (A
definition, sir)

Excellent! When we give the meaning of a particular term, we are actually defining
that term and the statement that we use to give meaning to a term is called a
definition. These concepts are highly important to our discussion for today
because we are going to talk about Technical and Operational Definitions.

Can anyone tell the class where do we usually use technical and operational
definition? (When writing an academic paper/Research or a study) That’s correct,
we use technical and operational definitions when we are asked to write an
academic paper particularly a research paper. Technical and Operational
Definitions are of big help to researchers in conducting their study. I have here the
meaning of technical definition, who would like to read? (Student reads the
definition) Technical Definitions class, technically refers to the aspect of
explaining or describing any technical terms or terminology. It can be used in
expanding the vocabulary since most of the technical terms are defined in the
exact manner. Technical definitions are commonly found in dictionaries.

There are two types of technical definitions. The parenthetical and the sentence
definition. When we talk about parenthetical definition, this is a type of technical
definition that defines a term by using more familiar synonym in a parenthesis.

Example: A research study must have a framework (outline) to guide the

researchers.

Sentence definition on the other hand follows a set pattern and more complex
terms are used.

Example: Statistics – is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection,

analysis, interpretation and presentation of numerical data.

Sentence definitions class are more complex than parenthetical definitions. It

defines a technical term by identifying the class where that particular term
belongs, and it gives the differentiating characteristics of that particular term. Take
a look at the table presented.

When writing a technical definition, there are guidelines that needs to be followed.
Guidelines in writing a Technical Definition
1. Be accurate (Use precise terms)
2. Be objective (Use facts, not opinions)
3. Grade your language (match the language to the knowledge of your
readers)
Let us now talk about the second type of definition which is the Operational
Definition. Can anyone from the class read the meaning of Operational Definition?
(Student reads definition)

Operational Definition is the specific meaning of a word or phrase given to it by

the group of people who use the word in their specific context. It is more on the
application of the word. It gives an obvious, precise, and communicable meaning
to a concept that is used to ensure comprehensive knowledge of the idea by
specifying how the idea is used and applied within a particular set of
circumstances. Just like technical definitions, there are also types of operational
definitions. We have type a, type b and type c operational definitions. Let’s talk
about them one by one.

Type A definitions are constructed in terms of the operations performed to cause

the phenomenon to occur.

Example: Fear – is a feeling produced by exposing oneself to an object or a

phenomenon highest in his/her hierarchy of things to be avoided.

Type B definitions can be constructed in terms of how the particular object or

thing operates.

Example: Monitor is a television receiver used in a studio to select/verify the

picture being broadcast from a particular camera.

Type C definitions are constructed in terms of what an object or phenomenon

looks like.
Example: Anxiety – is a state of feeling worried that sometimes results to
excessive pulse rate or high heart beat.

So, what’s the difference between Technical and Operational Definition? Let’s
have a look at the table presented. Let us define the word computer using both
technical and operational definition.
Okay class, always remember that technical definitions are definitions that are
found in dictionaries. It refers to the aspect of explaining or describing any
technical terms or terminology. It is a very detailed description of a term, process,
or phenomenon. Technical definitions have two types namely parenthetical and
sentence definition. Operational definition on the other hand is more on the
application of the word. It is the specific meaning of a word or phrase given to it by
ABSTRACTION
the group of people who use the word in their specific context. It refers to how the
word is used, what it looks like and to what field it is used. Operational definition
also has 3 types. We have the type a – operations performed for a phenomenon
to occur, type b – how the word operates, and type c – what an object or
phenomenon looks like. Is everything clear now, class? Let me see heart
reactions from everyone.
Okay class, it seems to me that you have already familiarized yourselves with the
concepts related to technical and operational definitions. I have here example definitions
and what you will do is you will identify whether the given definition is a technical or an
operational definition. You can simply unmute and state your family name to be
acknowledged and give your answer or you can also raise your hand. Are my instructions
clear, class? Let me see heart reacts if you are ready.

1. A computer is a device used to process and store data. – Technical

2. A computer is a device that is used to help students in completing their
academic tasks. – Operational
APPLICATION
3. Abstraction is the process of generalizing an idea. – Technical
4. Abstraction a process in lesson planning in which the teacher helps the learners
to look at the bigger picture and eventually generalize the topic. – Operational
5. An oval is a shape having a rounded and slightly elongated outline like an egg. –
Technical
6. An oval is an elliptical field or a field on which an elliptical track is laid out, as for
athletic contests. – Operational
Now that you are already familiar with the basic concepts of Technical and Operational
Definitions, let’s have a short exercise.
IV. ASSESSMENT To assess your understanding of today’s lesson, I will be giving a pop quiz.

Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer.

c. Operational Definition

b. It talks more on the application of the word itself.
c. It gives an obvious, precise, and communicable meaning to a
concept.

Now that you are already familiar with Technical and Operational Definitions, you
are now going to give technical and operational definitions for selected words. For
your assignment, you are going to write technical definition and an operational
definition for the following words.
