RS-485 Interface Retrofitting Guide

1. The RS-485 module model L is required for retrofitting an RS-485 interface to Air Control 1 and Air Control 3. 2. Before mounting the module, the supply voltage to the control must be disconnected and ensured to remain off. 3. The module is inserted into a slot on the control board behind the connection terminal and pins are inserted through holes to connect to the underlying circuit board.

Retrofitting an RS-485 interface

Air Control 1 and Air Control 3

1. Required components

The RS-485 module model L is required for retrofitting the interface.

Insertion depth

The insertion depth of the pin strips in the L model is larger than in the standard
version. Only the L model can be used for Air Control 1 and Air Control 3.

2. Switching off the voltages

Before mounting the module, the supply voltage of the control must be disconnected.

The housing of the control must be opened in order to mount the module. When the
housing is opened, live parts are freely accessible. Therefore, before removing the
cover of the housing, the voltages must be switched off and it must be ensured that
they cannot switch on again.

Caution: Also pay attention to external voltages – for instance, at the relay for
collective fault - which might exist, although the main switch or the emergency stop
switch has been operated.

3. Mounting the module

After the housing cover has been removed, the RS-485 module can be inserted in the
slot provided for it on the top left of the control board. The slot is located directly
behind the 4-pin plug-in screw terminal for connecting the interface.

RS-485 module

Insert the module in the directly accessible bare side of the board, not in the
socket terminal strips on the components side. It is not necessary to disassemble the
control board for this purpose. The board has holes through which the module can be
be inserted from behind into the socket terminal strips on the other side.

When you insert the module, make sure that the side with the jumpers faces the 4-pin
plug-in screw terminal on the outer side of the control board.

To do so, insert the pin strips of the module through the holes on the board into the
socket terminal strips under it. There are more holes than required for attaching the
module. The correct position of the pin strips is shown in the following diagram.

4. Deactivating the dummy interface

Controls with Flash program memory have a dummy interface which can be used for
carrying out a software update if there is no RS-485 module. If there is an RS-485
module, the dummy interface must be deactivated.

In Air Control 1 and Air Control 3 the dummy interface is deactivated with the 2-pin
DIP switch located on the components side of the control board under the slot for the
interface module.

Normally, both switches are set to the position ON. After mounting the module, move
the switches to the opposite position marked with 1 or 2.

5. Terminating resistors of the RS-485 interface

Activate the terminating resistors of the first and last device in the RS-485 network;
they must remain deactivated for all other devices. The terminating resistors are
activated with the jumpers on the RS-485 module.

Note: For a software update with a Flash programming adapter, the terminating
resistors must be temporarily deactivated if necessary.

6. Setting the menu parameters

The RS-485 interface functions in the operating software only if the related menu
parameters are set correctly. In particular, the address of the control must be set to the
prescribed value. The meaning of the parameters is described in the documentation of
the control software.
