ACTIVITY 1

EXPLORING THE LANGUAGE AND LITERARY THEORIES IN LITERATURE

This explains that the man/woman wants to express his/her true and intense
affection to the one they truly love, which is the one who died or either in some
instance which are miles away or someone who is happy with another lover. If only
the former or latter could hear or feel the love, everything will fall into place and
every surrounding burst in colors. An almost paradise feeling with the one you want
and you need your whole life with.

Checking Your Understanding/Sharing Insights

1. Which character do you believe is the play’s main character? Defend your answer.
● It was shown how the main character Mario was forced to choose a path that
he has long promised to not walk through again because of poverty. The story
shows one sad reality of life that when an individual is backed up on a wall, he
will do anything even if it's not accepted in his society.
2. What was the relationship between each character and the play’s central theme of
poverty?
● The scenario of the story is not far from what's happening with members of
our society now due to limited educational attainment that would qualify them
for a proper-paying job that would be adequate for their families' needs. The
sequence of the story and the technical aspect of the play should be
commended.
● This is a story of how wrong decisions become greater burdens to a family.
Mario’s family happens to be in the lower bracket of society. He cannot even
provide for his family’s basic needs. Albeit all this hardships, his wife Gloria,
still manages to keep her good virtuous. She insists that the way they are
living is a much better than the one they will have if they do wrong acts. But
Gloria’s entire constant reminder to Mario did not prosper.
3. Is there any symbolism for the apple in the short play? Why do you believe that?
● We all know that apples are a symbol of wealth. In this story , Mario was
represented as a person who had a weakness for temptation for the sake of
the people with whom he values that much.. Mario had to struggle every day
to feed his family.but in the story The apple symbolizes the temptation. It
appears to be big and red that could attract a person to have it unlike the one
that Mario gave to his daughter, Tita, instead
4. Why did Mario steal the apple, and why did he do so? Is it reasonable to make
such a
decision?
● The reason is because of an apple. He stole an apple for his daughter
because he thought that she would like it. For me is it is not reasonable
because first, it can cause dishonesty and people around you will think
something about you if you did something wrong.
5. What is the real meaning of this statement for you? Why? Did God create apple
trees to bear
fruit for the rich alone? Didn’t He create the whole world for everyone?

● Why life must be so, that the rich can have almost everything they want, as if
there are things exclusively for the rich alone. “Didn’t He create the whole
world for everyone?” I sometimes ask the same questions. Mario and I had
the same experience, Mario and I asked the same question. In this sense, the
lines became appealing to me, making me decide to treat this line as the point
of my reflection.
As a teenager born from a poor family, the words of Mario reminded me that
there are rich and there are poor. More than that, it paved the way for me to think
about this inequality in a more profound level. I may be born from a poor family, but it
is not my fault. It would be my fault if I stay poor. Yes, God created the whole world
for everyone. The inequality in terms of financial capacity is created by man. Having
that “exclusive apple” one day depends upon how we plant it now. If we plant pure
hard work fueled by determination, then we will be able to.
People are truly unequal when the basis is on their financial capacity.
Whether you were born on a rich family or a poor one, it wouldn’t matter…you can’t
do anything. But to stay poor or stay rich, it would be a decision that you should
decide for yourself. God created the world for everyone and everyone gets a chance
to have that exclusive apple…just grab it!

The world is an apple

(Story Analysis)
Mario decided to come back to his old life of crime when he lost his job when he tried
to steal an apple for his daughter. He keeps on insisting that his priority is to provide
what his wife and daughter needs. He left with Pablo, his old crime buddy, even if
Gloria pleaded very hard for him not to go with the man. This is a sad representation
of what is happening in society today. Due to lack of better opportunities to heighten
one’s standard of living, some become entangled with the wrong crowd. By doing so,
these individuals do not help their family at all; instead, they end up worsening their
family’s problem.
It is man’s basic instinct that drives him towards his survival. But, no matter what, he
should not forget that society expects him to conform to its norms. One’s action is
weighed right or wrong and thus should be kept towards the proper action. Another

to be in the lower bracket of society. As Mario got home one night, Gloria, his wife,
asked for money, which they needed to feed their daughter. Mario told her that he
doesn't have money. Gloria didn't believe him, and asked him to tell the truth. Mario
told his wife the truth - he was fired from his job. The reason is because of an apple.
He stole an apple for his daughter because he thought that she would like it - this
part shows his love for his daughter.
Gloria said that how can he lose his job by just taking one not a dozen not a crate
but one apple and Mario answered that he just saw it rolling and he found himself
putting it in his bag because Tita would love to have it, and Mario told Gloria that
there's no need to worry because he found a new job. Suddenly Pablo was there
ruining the whole conversation and asked them if how is their daughter doing and
he'll loan a few pesos to help there daughter and Gloria said that no thank you
because Mario stopped depending on Pablo.
Pablo said that Mario's new job was with Pablo and when Gloria heard it he told
Mario that it's a bad doing and risky. But Mario didn't listen and walked away with
Pablo and told Gloria not to worry because he will come back early in the morning
and don't wait for him. Gloria cries and shouts at Mario, while Tita was also crying
because he heard the conversation. This story is written by a Filipino author Alberto
Florentino and has many morals, but one major point stands out: no matter what
circumstances you are facing in life (failed marriage, infidelity, illness, poverty) you
have a role... responsibility and you have the power to choose to do the right thing;
In the end we all have the power of choice. Plot Summary: An apple factory worker is
fired from work after stealing an apple. He claims that he stole it to feed his sick
daughter, what he left out is that he actually had been using his salary to pay for
prostitutes, hence, the money that was intended for the family was diverted to satisfy
his selfish desire for sex.

1. What part of the text does the class system play?

● The World is an apple is a clear example of a Marxist literature. We can see
different ideologies and class systems that affect human behavior.
Classicism is distinctly seen in the text, when Gloria emphasized to Mario
that he should’ve not tried to bring home an apple because they are not rich.
Gloria has this belief that since they are poor they should not be aspiring for
better things. She believed that they could only have things that are allotted
for the poor (e.g. Lugaw). Injustice is also evident in the text, just by stealing a
single apple, Mario was fired out of his work
● This points me to Economic Power. The company where Mario worked was
just waiting for him to make mistakes. In this way they can throw men out
without any reason and replace them with men whom they know or whom
they want. This shows how status and power works in our society. Mario can’t
even complain because whatever he does these people who have the
authority will always win.
● Religion is also reflected in the text. Gloria has this belief that God will provide
for them if they only believe and pray. She even pointed out that the financial
crisis they are experiencing at the moment is only a challenge by God. And
that God will never leave them. Rugged Individualism is seen in the character
of Pablo, wherein he lures Mario to steal for a living. Pablo doesn’t think of
what might happen to Mario if he comes with him. He doesn’t even care to
what Gloria feels. Pablo is trying to point out that what they will do is for the
sake of everybody’s welfare. But the truth is, it is for Pablo alone. Pablo even
flaunts his wealth just to persuade Gloria to let Mario come with him.
● In my opinion, there is a conflict in the function of religion in the text. Religion
is the ideology that states that people should be satisfied. Religion is revealed
in the text but it is used to persuade Mario not to commit illegal acts. Religion
in the text also gives us the lesson that problems cannot be solved in a bad
way.
● Aside from religion there are no other conflicts that I saw in the text. The
World is an apple evidently shows how the poor struggle in order to survive
their everyday living and yet suffers for the injustices in our society.
2. What is the authors take on the social class system?
● The one-word prevailing message in the story is the word “Apple” that
symbolizes temptation and the dishonest life lived by Mario before. The theme
of the story is, it is man’s basic instinct that drives him towards his survival.
But, no matter what he should not forget that society expects him to confirm to
its norms. One’s action is weighed right or wrong and thus should be kept
towards the proper action and his wrong decisions become greater burdens to
a family that symbolizes the word “Apple”.
3. Is there any basic criticism of bourgeois society’s emptiness in the text?
● The World is an apple is a clear example of a Marxist literature. We can see
different ideologies and class systems that affect human behavior. Classicism
is distinctly seen in the text, when Gloria emphasized to Mario that he
should’ve not tried to bring home an apple because they are not rich. Gloria

provide for them if they only believe and pray. She even pointed out that the
financial crisis they are experiencing at the moment is only a challenge by
God. And that God will never leave them

● Economic conditions and Material circumstances mostly are the reasons

why poor are easily lured to commit illegal acts. That is how Pablo or the
wealthy people manipulate the poor. Pablo even said to Gloria to take the
money as a gift, since they cannot afford to pay for it. Pablo is showing not
what his money can do for Tita but what social status he is in.
4. What approximation of totality does the author highlight or disregard while
presenting
Society?
● Poverty is the main reason why Mario considers stealing as an option to make
money. Manipulation of Pablo is also a factor that affects Mario’s decisions.
The text somehow invites us to condemn and criticize socio-economic forces.
It tries to open our eyes in the reality that the poor have nothing to say
because they are forced to be submissive with those who are in power. The
text also shows how poor people, who only believe that God will help them,
struggle in their everyday living. How little food they eat, malnutrition happens
and above all unemployment rates increase. Their only hope is religion- God.
They still cling to the belief that God will provide for them and that they should
be content with what they have.
5. Is the depiction of characters from all socioeconomic levels EQUALLY
good?
6. What are the interactions and conflicts between characters from different
classes?
● In my opinion, there is a conflict in the function of religion in the text. Religion
is the ideology that states that people should be satisfied. Religion is revealed
in the text but it is used to persuade Mario not to commit illegal acts. Religion
in the text also gives us the lesson that problems cannot be solved in a bad
way.
Aside from religion there are no other conflicts that I saw in the text. The
World is an apple evidently shows how the poor struggle in order to survive
their everyday living and yet suffers for the injustices in our society.
7. What happens when the characters face adversity in terms of economics
and politics?
● This points me to Economic Power. The company where Mario worked was
just waiting for him to make mistakes. In this way they can throw men out
without any reason and replace them with men whom they know or whom
they want. This shows how status and power works in our society. Mario can’t
even complain because whatever he does these people who have the
authority will always win.
B. Reflecting Experience
The most significant learning I gained from the play is. If do you want something,
work hard for it to achieve it. The best feeling ever is you are able to buy all you want
in your own effort, blood and sweat. Getting your needs in a bad way have a
consequences at the end.
I realized that in society, we should we should learn how to be wise and not to be
tempt so easily in worldly things.
