1, SCOPE
414, Thisprocedure outine the general equirements of PWHT associated with welded Jolats of
Piping, Nozzles & related components using electrical resistance heating & cold formed
‘components (beats) methods
1.2, This procedut includes descriptions ofthe equipment, method of heating, location and type

‘This quality procedure describes the minimum quality requirements to ensure that post weld

43.13, HEATTREATMENT: Heat Treatment is used to avert or tellevethe detrimental effects of high
temperature and severe temperature gradients inherent in welding & forming. Provisions in
Para. 331 of ASME 831.3 are basic practices which ae suitable for most welding, bending &
forming operations, but not necessarily appropriate forall service conitions.

PREHEATING: The necessity for preheating prior to welding, and the temperature to be sed,
shall be established by the engineering design. However, the preheat temperatures for the
various P-Numbers materials shall nt be less than those shown in table 3301.1 of ASME
£831,3, including those shown as “Recommended.” The sitablity ofthe preheat temperature
shall abo be demonstrated by the procedure qualification. For joint of dissimilar thickness,
the nominal wall thickness stated in table 3301.1 of ASME B31.3 shall be that ofthe thicker
component a the joint. Preheat requirements for an unlisted material shal be specified in
the wes,

5. RESPONSIBILITIES:
5.1, Project Manager shall be the responsible for the overall implementation ofthe company
safety 8 qualty plan and ensure efficient execution of workin accordance with project
speciation and this procedure.
5.2. QCManager shall be responsible fr ensuring al activities ae carried out as per the project
‘quality plan, project specifications, and this procedure. He shall ensure inspections, esting,
and examinations are carried out as per the approved ITP
5.3. Piping Supervisor shall be the responsible to ensure the safe and efficient working
‘envionment to monitor plant and equipment requirements and to ensure that productivity
and qualty are maintained by ther subordinates/
5.4. QCSupervisr shall arrange and supervises all QC activities ensuring that all Inspections are
performed in timely manner and documented. Before starting new activity tool box shall be
‘conducted,
555. Welding inspector shall be responsible for inspection and testing of al piping welding
activities. He shall be responsible for identifying the joins to be PWHTed and requesting for
‘the for PWHT.
5.6. NDT Coordinator shall co-ordinate with welding inspectors and NDT service providers / PWHT
Inspector/PWHT Technicians for executing the PWHT.
‘5.7. PWHT Inspector shall be responsible for coordinating with welding inspectors, PWHT
‘techni and NDT Coordinator for executing PWHT. He shal be responsible for heat
treatment types of equipment tobe used forthe work, such as electrical resistance heating
elements, induction cols, or gas fred heaters, He shall verify heat teatment parameters are
as par the approved heat treatment procedure and WPS. He shal be responsible forall
calibration of PWHT machines.
5.8, PWHT Technician shall be responsible fr heat treatment and heat treatment equipment
operations
6, PROCEDURE
6.1, The Welding supervisor and/or the Quality Control Manager shall establish the Requirements
for Heat Treatment from the Contract Specifications, WPS and the Applicable Code.
6.2. Prior to the PWHT, the approved PWT Inspector shall check/veify that all welding and
repairs (if any) have been completed and accepted per the requirements on ITP and/or weld
plan. Quality Inspector checks the location, number and method of placement of

thermocouples on the component to ensure compliance tothe procedure. He ensures thatthe
‘temperature measuring instruments have been calibrated accordingto Schedule Q
requirements.
6.3. The Heat Treatment Parameters shall be recorded on the Heat Treatment Report/Reques.

7.4. POWER SOURCE SUPPLY
7.4.2. The equipment shall have a current valid certificate and shall bear appropriate electrical
power input output, Power source used for post weld treatment may be a 3phase 6SKVA.

7.2, TEMPERATURE RECORDER
7.2, PWHT Temperature shall be progressively recorded using 2 multipoint, potentiometric type
strip chart recorder with but in thermocouple reference junction compensation circu, 12
polnt "SEKONIC” recorder wit indicating accuracy of 0.5% of fl span will be use.
Effective recording width I 180 mm and printing frequency i 5 sec. at SOHZ.
7.22. Chart speed shall be selected ether on 25mmyhr. or 50 mm and canbe verified by using a
‘stop watch. Inputs shall be “K" type thermocouples connected using copper constantan
compensating cable of 30m length via programmable temperature controller. 12 Nos.

Thermocouples can be connected to the recorder and each channel will be printed in
Aifferent colors. The recorder shall have mult point chart recorders cleary efferentiate

an electrical and thermal insulation as well as protect the wire from atmospheric
contamination.

7.29. Thermacouple plug and sockets shall be used for connecting TC wies to compensation cables
and compensating cables tothe instruments
1.20, Proper cleaning ofthe ares where the thermacouple tobe attached shallbe done (with wire
brush ofl) to make sure that its smooth and free from dit, grease, oll etc. Nickel
‘chromium and nickel aluminum wires shal be fixed with a stance of separation 4-6 mm for
accurate measurements. No preheating is required for fixing the thermocouple wire by using
this equipment.

7.5. FLEXIBLE CERAMIC MAT HEATERS
7.5.1. Heating elements used for PWT shall be flexible ceramic mat heaters of 60y, 2.4 kw

7.6. ELEMENTS
76.1. For circumferential welds, the heating bands shal be equally spaced around the weld. The
width ofthe heated band shall bea minimum of times thickness ofthe material being
welded from each edge ofthe weld but not less than 25 mm from each edge ofthe weld,
whichever is greater
7.6.2. When heat treating structural materials, positioning of heat bands must be caried out to
ensure a minimum coverage of sik (6 mes ofthe plates thickness ether side ofthe weld

71.8, THERMOCOUPLES
17.84. Only Type K ‘(Chromel-Alumel} or Type‘! (ton Constantan) thermacoupls are permitted
‘The thermocouple shall have itil calibration check. All extension cables, compensating
cables, and jumper cables in the measurement or contro circuits shall be the specified
thermocouple wice or the matching extension wie (.e., KX or IX, as appropriate. For Type
thermocouples, copper-constantan Type T compensating cables may be used with the
following conditions.
2) The junction between the Copper-Constant compensating cable and the Type’
‘thermocouple lead shal be a minimum af 05 m outside the insulated area,

only. Other methods of attachment are not permitted. The thermocouples shall nt bein

9. SURFACE CONDITIONS
9.1. The welds to be heat treated shall be prepared free of Grease, Lubricants, dust and coating to

protections shall be removed.
9.2. Durlngheat treatment lt shall be necessary to protect all machined surfaces from oxidation such

411.1. Preheat shall bein accordance with ASME 831,3 TABLE 331.11 & SAES-W-011. For materials not
covered by this code or standard, preheat shall be as specified in welding procedure.
111.2. The preheating temperature shal be maintained through the welding process. Flexible ceramic

11.9, If the wall thickness exceeds 25 mm and preheating isto be dane from the same sie asthe
Welding, then the heat source shall be removed for 1 minut to allow for temperature
equaatin prior to measuring the temperature.

11.21,Unless specified otherwise, the maximum interpass temperature shall be 177°C for PeNo. 8,

12.1, Post weld heat treatments PWHT shal be in accordance with applicable ASME Design code,
831.3, SAES.W-01L,
12.2. Prior to start of work the cantractor or fabricator shall prepare a table isting each joint or
component requiring heat treatment, which shall be submitted to PSAL/ARAMCO for review.

123. Prior to start of PHT, component hall be checked to ensure that all restrains are removed and
the components free to expand and contract, and suitable and sufficient supports are used. In
deition the PWHT chart shall be marked prior to PWHT with identification number ofthe
welds/Drawing & Line Number.
12.4 Allmachined surfaces, such as flanges faces, threaded bolt holes, threads, et, shall be
protected from oxidation during the hest treatment by coating with deoxaluminite or other
suitable materi
125. The applicable industry specs must be followed for PWHT requlrement for any service not listed
above. ther process conditions may aso require PWHT, as determined during the project
design. Code exemptions for PWHT are not permitted if PWHT I specified for process
conditions
12.6, These requirements apply to external welds to attach non-pressure containing component to
the piping (eg, reinforcement pad ar sleeve attached tothe pip) and to seal weds
12,7, PWHT requirement shall be based on piping line clas as per PMS.
12.8. In the sour service environment, PWHT is mandatory forthe following cases:

12.3, The PWHT heating and cooling rates above 316°C shall not exceed 222°C/hr divided by the weld
thickness in inches, but In no case shall it be more than 222°C/h.
12.10.For PWHTS that are not performed in a furnace, insulation shal be applied a minimum of 300,
mm on ether side ofthe weld that ito be PWHTed. The insulation shall not be removed before
the temperature has cooleé to below 150°C. The ends of open lines shall be closed offin order
1 eliminate drafts or air circulation that could lower the temperature on the inside surface of
‘the joint unless the intemal surface is also insulated.
12.11.Code exemptions for post weld heat treatment of frst materials based onthe use of
austenitic or nickel-based electrodes are not permitted. (Austenitic or nickel-based electrodes
shall nt be used fr Feit materials except disillar metal welds listed in SAES.W-O11 and
overlays)
12.12,Colle exemptions for post weld treatment of P-No. 4 and P-No. 5 materials are not permitted for

12.18. Thermocouples anda calbrated temperature char recorder shall be used to provide an
‘accurate and legible record ofall PWHTS. Allcharts shall be marked withthe date and sufiient
information to uniquely idently the jont/ component being heat treated. Multipoint chart,
recorders shall clearly differentite/identfy each channel/point by use of different colored inks

12.19.Temperature recorders shall be calbrated every three (3} months anda current calibration
sticker shall be maintained on the recorder The calibration frequency may be extended to 12
‘months with approval ifthe documented calibration checks for that particular recorder

12.20,0uring cooling, When the temperature has fallen below 600"F (315°C), the current will then be

12.28.After completion af the PWHT all thermocouples shall be removed and the attachment areas
{ound smooth to clean and sound metal. Ifthe specfid bythe Inspector, the areas shall be
‘examined by MT or PT after grinding,
prior to PWHT to avold a double PWHT cycle if welding defects are found after the PWHT.
However, this the vendor's responsiblity to ensure the welds are of acceptable quality to
WHT.
412.24, WHT shall be performed before NDE Is conducted. Its recommended that NDE be performed
