In the past education meant literary education only. The aim of this education was to give training in subject like philosophy, history, grammar and literature. These subjects were taught to develop the personality of a student. But when the student left the school or college, he was fit for nothing except a scholarly discussion on philosophy or history. When the English came to India, they gave us a system of education which made us good clerks, but didnt taught us any art or trade to earn a decent living. Liberal education or literary education was good in itself but it was like building at the top of the edifice. It gave us a superficial culture without any practical training in the art of making a living.
