a revolution to happen
2. Reaction paper about the selected chapters, discussing the role of the youth in society.
The sick man said nothing, so Padre Florentino, deeply thoughtful, murmured: “Where are the
youth who will consecrate their golden hours, their illusions, and their enthusiasm to the welfare
of their native land? Where are the youth who will generously pour out their blood to wash away
so much shame, so much crime, so much abomination? Pure and spotless must the victim be that
the sacrifice may be acceptable! Where are you, youth, who will embody in yourselves the vigor
of life that has left our veins, the purity of ideas that has been contaminated in our brains, the
fire of enthusiasm that has been quenched in our hearts? We await you, O youth! Come, for we
await you!”
In the last chapter of El Filibusterismo, the above was mentioned in the English version of the
said novel. In this part of that chapter, the youth is called to be the one to save the motherland
from the cruelness of the world, for the youth have the bravery and determination that the adults
have lost along the way. The youth, as per what Dr. Jose Rizal said, is the hope of the future, and
in this case, as per what I have understood on this part, I youth is seen as what Dr. Jose Rizal
said. The youth is the symbol of the future, without them, no one could possibly continue the
next generation.
In my own interpretation, the youth is also a symbol for strength, because unlike the older
generation, the youth seem to still have that passion, determination, and strength that day by day,
as you grow older, you slowly lose. Another thing that the youth might symbolize is a dream. As
per my experience, the youth, much like me, is expected to continue the dream that the older
generation wasn’t able to achieve, and to be honest, it is a bit understandable, because we, the
new generation of Filipinos, carry the future of both our country and the lives of many Filipinos,
we represent the modern Filipino.
