ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF RIGID PAVEMENT
10 ADVANTAGES:
- The rigid pavement they provide excellent smooth surface for driving.
- Maintenance costs are basically nonexistent.
- Rigid pavement has a very long lifespan.
- It provides better visibility.
- They perform quite satisfactorily when laid on poor types of sub grades.
- Can bear very heavy traffic load.
- Strength of the road is less dependent on the strength of the sub grade.
- Rigid pavement carries high flexural strength.
- Rigid pavement can be installed on low- and high-quality soils.
- Resistant to damage from oil spills and chemicals
10 DISADVANTAGES:
- The rigid pavement Initial installation fee is expensive.
- The rigid pavement may fault at transverse joints.
- Rigid pavement may lose non-skid surface with time.
- Rigid pavement requires frequent joint maintenance.
- They are liable to crack and warp due to temperature variations.
- They cannot be opened to traffic shortly after construction.
- It creates noise, as steel tyred vehicles cause lot of noise while moving on them.
- The rigid pavement is Low and very rough riding quality.
- Any excessive deformations occurring due to heavier wheel loads are not recoverable in this
pavement type.
- It is not possible to adopt stage construction programmed in rigid pavement.
