Optimizing a circuit breaker's closing or opening moment is of utmost importance when switching reactive loads because random switching can sometimes result in high transient overvoltages and inrush currents. These transients generate stresses for all substation and network equipment, leading to accelerated aging or - in the worst case - destruction of equipment. The RPH2 provides a reliable, low-cost way to reduce these switching transients to an acceptable level. Serving as a control uni, it delays the switching order - phase by phase - unti the pre- efined switching time (cepending on currentvoltage network characteristics) that reduces switching transients to a minimum level. The RPH2 isa particularly important element when switching large transformers, shunt reactors, capacitors and uncompensated lines. « Load Type of operation [Controlled instant [Stress avoided a Capacitive | Closing [Zero voltage Overvoltages inrush current Capactive [Opening [Optimal arcing time [Restrikes overvoltages Inductive [Closing Vottage peak Inrush current Inductive [Opening [Optimal arcing time _[Restrikes overvoltages Example: Switching of a capacitor bank ‘The tripping / closing impulse is sent to the RPH2, where tis delayed and released so as to ensure switching at optimum time (frst zero-crossing of reference voltage after a coil order has been received is the trigger signal for RPH2). The calculated delay depends on the load, the circuit breaker and the various compensations performed inside the RPH2. Reaching the optimum switching point requires thatthe circuit breaker operating times remain very stable, whatever the conditions may be. In order to compensate the variations of operating times according to environmental factors, the RPH2 monitors continuously ambient temperature, control voltage, operating times and ~ in case of a hydraulic-operated driving mechanism hydraulic pressure, Several compensation functions, adapted to each type of breaker, allow the RPH2 to compensate forall deviaions of operating times, For long-term dri of operating times, an adaptive contol facility is provided for, thus guaranteeing optimum switching accuracy throughout the whole ife of circuit-breakers.
