LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

ENGLISH 7
Quarter 1: Week 2

I. Introduction
Have you ever ask yourself why are you viewing videos? How much
time do you spend for this? Does it give you something you can learn? Or
just to past the time? A lot of people like watching. It may be from television
sets, cellular phones, laptops or through video streaming sites. Popular
themes range from Korean drama series to “how to videos” and video blogs.
This activity sheet will help you identify different video types and choose
what is more helpful for students like you.

II. Learning Competency

Identify the genre, purpose, intended audience and features of various
viewed texts such as movie clip, trailer, newsflash, internet-based program,
documentary, video. (EN7VC-I-d-6)

III. Objectives:
At the end of this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
1. differentiate various types of texts viewed.
2. identify the purpose of the videos viewed.
3. create a 20-second video or comic strips about following the safety
protocols during this pandemic.

IV. Discussion
Let’s Get Familiar
DIRECTIONS: Below is the chart of materials or programs which you can
view from your television sets or through the internet. Examine each item
and put a check mark under the column very familiar if you do not know
about the material. Put a check mark under the column familiar if you
know or you have heard about the material, not familiar if you have
watched one. Copy the table and write your answers on a piece of paper.

Familiarity Chart
Materials Very Familiar Not
Familiar Familiar
1. documentary
2. internet-based
3. movie trailer
4. news flash
5. weather report
Now you already assessed your familiarity with the programs which
show videos of such, you are indeed ready for the following discussions.

The previous activity introduces the topic of this lesson, the types of
various text viewed.

According to many studies, 75% of all the information processed by

the brain comes from visual formats (videos, photos, graphic organizers)
(Raiyn, 2016). Wow! So people are really called visual learners. Just like you,
you can actually learn from viewing the videos from Youtube or Facebook.
These videos have different genre or types like: movies, news,
documentaries or weather reports. The genre of a video also tells its target
audience (group of individuals whose videos are intended for) and what
purpose (it tells why the video is created; the message that video wants to
tell) it may serve to them. That is why the programs you watch on TV and
Cinema are categorized by the Movie and Television Review and
Classification Board (MTRCB). There are videos which are applicable for
children or rated as G; for children with the guidance of the parents or rated
PG; and strict guidance from parents or the rated SPG.
Viewing is an active process of comprehending visual media, such as
in television and online platform wherein there are advertising images, films,
diagrams, symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and
paintings. This activity helps us acquire information and appreciate ideas
that visually communicated by others. So, to better understand the lesson,
here are the five genres of viewing that will also guide you on what videos
you should view:

A news flash is a single item of important news that is aired separately and
often interrupts other programs. This is shown to update the people with the
very important news at the moment. The best examples of these are 24 Oras
News Alert and News Patrol. This is intended for everyone since it informs
the people on the current situation they are in.

A weather report is usually a part of an entire news program that tells and
fortells weather conditions on a specific area. It is sure that you know Mang
Tani, the weather forecaster. The target audience are households for them to
be prepared when the disaster comes.

An internet-based program is a program that is informative and can be

accessed through the website. From the word itself, you can only watch this
if you are connected to the internet. Netflix, Iflix, Youtube and Facebook are
just some of the sites where you can view these internet-based programs.
There are tons of programs to mention. Basically this is for everyone, just be
mindful in choosing the shows and programs you would choose. Always ask
your parents’ guidance.

Movie trailer is a short clip from a film to tease the audience about what
they will see in the movie. It is mostly an advertisement strategy to promote
the film so the viewers will get excited to watch it. Films are also rated so,
watch only ones which are suited for you.

Documentary is a research-based reporting that deals with a specific topic

and format. Popular documentaries shown by TV networks are featured in
some of these programs: I-Witness, SOCO, Storyline and Imbestigador.
These documentaries illustrate in-depth research on a topic so you can
understand the situations clearly. Since documentaries tackle problems in
the society, you are required to watch these with your parents with strict
guidance.
