*WARNING: DO NOT PRINT DOUBLE-SIDED, YOU WILL NEED THE BACK OF THE SHEETS FOR NOTE TAKING. *

Overview
In this manual, you will learn how to write a formal email, a summary, a cover letter,
and an essay. In pages 4-7 you will find a series of exercises to practice the topics. In
order to be able to complete them you will work using the following procedure.

Lesson 3.1 Types of Business Writing

Activity: Collaborative Research

Step 1: Get into groups of three.

Step 2: Each person must choose one of the following topics. TOPICS SHOULD NOT BE
REPEATED WITHIN YOUR GROUP.

● Formal emails
● Cover letter
● Essay

Step 3: For your UAAL hour this week, investigate your topic using two different resources
(links and books). Use the questions below to guide your research and write helpful notes on the
back of the page. You will be explaining your topic to your group and presenting one printed
example (not the information, just the example). You should provide enough information for your
team to answer the exercises and/or write an example of their own.
On page 3 you will find suggested links to search for the information and at UAAL there
will be a section with suggested books.
1. What is it?
2. Format (structure, parts or template) that shows the process and what to
include when writing it.
3. Useful information such as what to do or what not to do.
*The following are suggestions of links you can use but remember you have to search
for the information using books at UAAL too.

find in the following link: shorturl.at/ceNUX
Activity: Collaborative Research (continued)

Step 4: You will need to have your notes and printed example ready in class to share what
you found with your group and do the exercises together.

Step 5: As homework, write an example different from the one you investigated about and
bring it to class (your teacher will tell you when to bring it so you do peer correction).

Step 6: Exchange your essay with a partner and answer the peer correction questionnaire in
page 10. Afterwards, you will give feedback to your partner and as homework you will rewrite
your work using the feedback given.

Step 7: Turn in your final work.
