The title of the story I am writing about is called “The Story of Benito”, the author of this book is

unknown due to it being a folktale. I chose this story because Benito reminds me to be
responsible, caring and supportive. He inspires me to help my family in any way I can,
financially and emotionally, and to know that there are gonna be rocky roads ahead of us, and
that we should learn to overcome it.

Benito was an only son who lived with his father and mother in a little village. They were very
poor, and as the boy grew older and saw how hard his parents struggled for their scanty living he
often dreamed of a time when he might be a help to them. The story takes place in a village near
a beautiful castle.

Benito is kind, caring, and he doesn’t give up easily. He does

First, It took him a long time to persuade his parents to allow him to go, due to the long journey,
and for fear that the king would not be gracious. But they eventually agreed to let him go. After
he reached the palace, he was not at first permitted to see the king. But the boy, being very
earnest, at last secured a place as a servant. For Benito, who had only known life in a village,
there was a whole new world. Although the work was hard, he was happy that now he could help
his father and mother. One day the king sent for him and said: “I want you to bring to me a
beautiful princess who lives in a land across the sea. Go at once, and if you fail you shall be
punished severely,”

Next, As the boy felt his heart sink, he responded as bravely as he could, "I will, my lord," and
closed the door on the king's chamber. He immediately prepared things for a long journey, for he
was determined to at least try to follow the order. As soon as everything was ready, Benito
began. It wasn't long before he came across a large bird that was tightly bound with strings in a
thick forest. As he pleaded for him to untie the strings, the bird said that he would do whatever
he asked. As soon as Benito released the bird, it flew off, calling back to him that its name was
Sparrow-hawk.

Then, He continued his journey until he reached the sea. He stared sadly out over the waters.
Suddenly, the King of the Fishes swam toward him and asked why he was upset. Asked why he
wanted to go over sea, the boy replied that he wanted to find a beautiful princess for the king.
The fish told him to hop onto his back and swam to the other side. He met a strange woman who
inquired what it was he sought, and when he had told her she said “The Princess is kept in a
castle guarded by giants. Take this magic sword, for it will kill instantly whatever it touches.”
And she handed him the weapon. As he approached the castle he could see that it was
surrounded by many giants, and as soon as they saw him they ran out to seize him, but they
went unarmed for they saw that he was a mere boy. As they approached he touched those in
front with his sword, and one by one they fell dead. Then the others ran away in a panic, and left
the castle unguarded. Benito entered, and when he had told the Princess of his errand, she was
only too glad to escape, and she set out at once with him for the palace of the king.

Although, At the seashore the King of the Fishes was waiting for them, After a time the King
asked the Princess to become his wife, and she replied: "I will, O King, if you will get the ring I
lost in the sea as I was crossing it". As with losing an earring, Benito was tired and exhausted,
because he couldn't find the princess's lost earring feeling disappointed in himself. Suddenly the
King of Mice approached him and asked why he was upset, Benito told him that he could not
find the lost earring, and that hope was lost, but the King of Mice helped him, and he found it.

Finally, At last, the princess had one final request: she asked for water from Heaven, Benito
called for Sparrow-Hawk to ask him to fetch water from the Heavens, and he agreed
enthusiastically. When the Princess saw that her wish had been fulfilled she asked the King to cut
her in two and pour over her the water from heaven. The King was not able to do this, so she cut
herself, and then as he poured the water over her grew into the most beautiful woman he had
ever seen. Eager to become handsome himself, the King then begged her to pour over him the
water from the other cup. He cut himself, and she did as he requested, but immediately there
arose a creature most ugly and horrible to look upon, which soon vanished out of sight. Then the
Princess called Benito and told him that because he had been so faithful to his master and so kind
to her, she chose him for her husband. They were married amid great festivities and became king
and queen of that broad and fertile land. During all the great rejoicing, however, Benito never
forgot his parents. One of the finest portions of his kingdom he gave to them, and from that time
they all lived in great happiness.

The Story of Benito is a Filipino Folk Tale about a young boy who wishes to one day help his poor parents.
Growing up, his parents tell him of a King that lives in a distant land. One day, he convinces them to leave
home and find work as a servant at the King’s castle.

Benito’s adventure begins when the King orders him to find a princess for him to marry or be severely
punished. As Benito is traveling, he enters a forest and frees a bird named Sparrowhawk who vows to help
him when called upon. Benito continues his journey until he comes upon a sea. With the help of the King of
Fishes he is able to cross the sea. After crossing the sea he meets a strange woman who tells him the
princess is kept in a castle guarded by giants. The woman gives Benito a magic sword and tells him how to
defeat the giants. When Benito comes to the princess’ castle he defeats the giants and rescues her. With the
help of the King of Fishes he crosses the sea with the princess and returns to the king.

After a little time passes, the king proposes to the princess. The princess promises to accept once the king
finds the jewelry she lost on her journey to him. The king summons Benito to find the lost jewelry. When
Benito returns with the princess’ lost jewelry she requests one more wish of the king, to bring her water from
heaven and the lower world. Again, the King ordered Benito to go forth and fulfill her wishes. With the help of
his friend Sparrowhawk, Benito returns with the water. The princess pours the water from heaven over herself
and becomes the most beautiful woman the king has ever seen. Hoping to become handsome, the king pours
the water from the lower world over himself, but instead becomes a horrible creature and vanishes out of sight.
The princess then tells Benito because of his loyalty to the king and kindness to her, she would marry him. In
the end, Benito and the princess become king and queen of the land. Benito never forgets his parents who live
happily ever after in a portion of his kingdom.
