DLP in Earth Sci

This document provides a detailed lesson plan for an Earth Science class on minerals and rocks for 11th grade students. The lesson plan outlines the objectives to understand mineral formation and identify common minerals. It details procedures for introductory and group activities to motivate students and discuss mineral properties. Formative assessment questions are provided to check students' understanding of rock and mineral concepts. The lesson plan requires students to apply their knowledge by identifying everyday items made from minerals.

V. PROCEDURES
Preliminary Activity:

Introductory Activity I. Opening Prayer

II. Checking of attendance

III. Ask students to pick up trashes on the floor instilling the value of
cleanliness. Encouraged them to arrange their chairs properly to facilitate
orderliness of the classroom.

Integration of Content Vocabulary PRE-CLASS ACTIVITY (Spelling)

Words and Reading
 Let the student spell out at least 3 scientific words and give its
Activity/Strategy meaning.
MOTIVATION

 Introduce a short game “What am I made of?” by letting the student

guess a certain substance and name what mineral is it made of.

Analysis GROUP ACTIVITY (Collaborative Activity)

 Divide the class into 4 groups and let each group do the following
tasks:
Group 1 – The Song Writers
Let the group composed a short song about Minerals and its
importance.
Group 2 – The Minerologists
Let the group discuss 2 rock-forming minerals and its uses to society
Group 3 – The Dancers
Let the group create a short Jazz Chant involving the properties of
minerals.
Group 4 – The Poemists
Let the group write a short poem about minerals
DISCUSSION ON MINERALS

Abstraction MINERAL - Minerals are the fundamental components of rocks also called
as the basic building blocks of rocks.

To be considered a mineral, the substance must meet the 5 criteria:

1. Solid - The substance must exist as a solid under normal conditions on
Earth.
2. Naturally Occurring - The substance must be naturally occurring on
Earth, not man-made.
3. Inorganic/Abiogenic - The substance must be inorganic, not living or
made from living things.
4. Fixed Chemical Formula - The substance must have a fixed chemical
formula. Made of specific elements.
5. Specific Atomic Arrangement - The atoms that make up the substance
must be arranged in an orderly structure.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Luster – it refers to how light reflects off on the surface of a mineral
a. Metallic
b. Non-metallic
Hardness- the ability to resist being scratched
Color- is the most eye-catching feature of many minerals. Many minerals
come in a diversity of colors such as quartz.
Streak - on the other hand is the color of a mineral in powdered form.
Crystal form/Habit- The external shape of a crystal or groups of crystals
is displayed / observed as these crystals grow in open spaces
Cleavage -if a mineral breaks or splits apart with smooth surfaces in
certain directions
Fracture: if a mineral breaks with a rough or jagged surface

OTHER PROPERTIES
Taste – a few minerals have a characteristic taste Halite tastes like salt
Odor – a few minerals have a characteristic odor like Clay minerals have
an “earthy” smell
Magnetism – some minerals with large amounts of iron oxide are attracted
to magnets
Double Refraction – a clear mineral placed over an image will show 2
images by the light being split as it enters some crystalline minerals
Chemical tests – how do minerals react to specific chemicals
Let student draw or write about some of the things that are made from
Application minerals and ways we use it in everyday life.
