The Philippine flag was unfurled for the first time on May 28, 1898, after the victory of Gen.
Aguinaldo's troops in the Battle of Alapan in Cavite. It was formally presented to the Filipino
people on June 12, 1898, during the Independence day rites. Currently, Flag Days in the
Philippines are observed from May 28 to June 12 by virtue of Executive Order No. 179, signed
by President Fidel Ramos in 1994.
The flag was unfurled from the front window of Aguinaldo's house. The balcony - where the flag
is raised every June 12 to commemorate the declaration of independence - was added to the
house 2 decades later, between 1919 and 1921.
The Declaration, was prepared and written by Bautista in Spanish. He patterned after the
American Declaration of Independence.
The "Act of the Declaration of Independence" was signed by 97 Filipinos, appointed by
Aguinaldo, and one retired American officer, Mr. L.M. Johnson, a colonel of artillery.
President Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence between 4 and 5 in the afternoon.

It was originally entitled Marcha Filipina Magdalo - after the name of Aguinaldo's faction in the
Katipunan in Cavite - before it was changed to Marcha Nacional Filipina. It was then adopted as

The Marcha Nacional Filipina was only an instrumental march. In 1899, the poem Filipinas
(written in Spanish) by Jose Palma was adopted as the lyrics of the national anthem. It was then
translated into English during the American occupation. Filipino translations of the lyrics first
appeared in the 1940s. Finally, in 1956, the current version of the national anthem, Lupang
Hinirang, was sung for the first time.

Rather than declaring an early independence, Apolinario Mabini believed that it was more
important to "reorganize the government... to convince the foreign powers of the competence
and stability of the new government." opposed the plan to declare the country's independence
on June 12, 1898

On July 4, 1946, the United States formally granted the Philippines its independence after World
War II. Every year thereafter, July 4 had been recognized as the country's Independence Day,
with June 12 celebrated as Flag Day. But in 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal
issued Proclamation No. 28, declaring June 12, 1962 as a special public holiday to celebrate
Philippine Independence Day. Republic Act 4166, signed by Macapagal in August 1964,
formally moved the celebration of Independence Day to June 12.
