Combination of two or more words that form


ONE NEW WORD

3 TYPES OF COMPOUND WORDS


CLOSED COMPOUND
-two words are squeezed together to form a single word
with NO SPACE between them
EXAMPLE:
eggplant grandmother
cowboy textbook
Basketball bathroom

OPEN COMPOUND
-two words are treated as one word but still HAVE A
SPACE between them.
EXAMPLE:
High school Ice cream
Dining room Full moon

HYPHENATED COMPOUND
-two words and (sometimes more than two words) have
HYPHENS between them.
time-out mother-in-law
hand-picked over-the-counter
