How many words can you create from the word roots in the middle circle
by combining other word parts with them? The words you create should
consist a prefix (in the small ovals on the left) and a root, a root and a
suffix (in the small ovals on the right), or a prefix, a root and a suffix. If
there is more than one spelling of a word part, you may use any of them.

B. Development What I know?


Let us answer the following activities for us to check what you already
know about affixes.

Change the underlined words to new words with affixes. Rewrite the
sentence with the new word formed.
1. The story of the flying monkey is not believable.
2. The storyteller also looked not sure of his details.
3. Many believe it was not true.
4. The storyteller looked without hope because no one believed him.
5. But some admired him because he was without fear to try and tell the
story.

Change the words inside the parentheses by using correct suffixes to


complete the meaning of the sentences.

What Is it?
Affixes are words added to a root word that changes the meaning of the
root word. There are affixes added at the beginning of the word. There
are also affixes added at the end of the word.
A prefix is a letter or group of letters added before a word. It changes the
meaning of the word. Among the commonly used prefixes are un-, im-,
dis-, re-.
The affixes un-, and im- and dis- means “not”.
The affix re- means “again

Suffixes are a type of affix that are placed at the beginning of a word to
modify or change the meaning of a word. Your knowledge of prefixes
help widen your vocabulary and boost your reading comprehension.

In the paragraph below, circle all the words with suffixes and give their
meaning.

It was summertime. The children are excited to visit their


grandparents in the farm. The children had sleepless night. They were
imagining of the wonderful things they do in the farm. They play and eat
in a peaceful meadow near the lake. They sometimes catch fish with the
help of grandpa and their cousins. They sometimes swim in the lake with
their cousins. Their cousins were helpful to make things easy for them.
In the afternoon, they were so eager to help in feeding grandpa’s animals
while grandma is watchful and reminds them to be careful. The children
can’t wait for another summer to come. They wish they could do these
things this summer and for the next summer to come.
