(ME721) [SENSOR AND SIGNAL CONDITIONING]
Time: 2-15 P.M. to 3-00 P.M. Date: 02-12-2020 Max. Marks: 25
Note: Answer all questions, Use of scientific calculator permitted, Assume any missing data.
Q.I (a). Suggest any two setups using sensor that could be used, as part of a control system, to 04
determine the difference in levels between liquids in two containers. The output is to
provide an electrical signal for the control system. (Give set up, sensor output and
processing)
(b). A strain gauge pressure sensor has the following specification. Will it be suitable for the 03
measurement of pressure of the order of 100 kPa to an accuracy of ±5 kPa in an
environment where the temperature is reasonably constant at about 20°C?
Ranges: 2 to 70 MPa, 70 kPa to 1 MPa
Excitation: 10 V d.c. or a.c. (r.m.s.)
Full range output: 40 mV
Non-linearity and hysteresis errors: 60.5%
Temperature range: 254 to 1120°C
Thermal shift zero: 0.030% full range output/°C
Thermal shift sensitivity: 0.030% full range output/°C
What is the total error due to non-linearity and hysteresis for a reading of 100kPa ?
Q.II a) Illustrate the application of photovoltaic cell for measuring width of the material 03
03
b) A quartz crystal having relative permittivity of 4.5, a thickness of 2 mm and voltage
sensitivity of 0.055 Vm/N is subjected to a stress of 1.5MN/sq.m. Calculate the voltage output
and charge sensitivity of the crystal given permittivity for free space 8.85 x 10 -12 F/m (Derive
the relations)
Q.III Illustrate the application of Hall effect sensor for measuring the angular position of the motor 06
shaft indicating the sensor output signals in clockwise and counter clockwise.
Q.IV A parallel plate capacitive transducer uses plate of size 25 mm x 20 mm which are separated 06
by a distance 0.2mm. Calculate the value of capacitance when the dielectric is air having a
permittivity of 8.85 x 10-12 F/m.
a) Calculate the change in capacitance if a linear displacement reduces the distance between
the plates to 0.16 mm. Also calculate the ratio of per unit change of capacitance to per unit
change of displacement.
b) Suppose a mica sheet 0.01 mm thick is inserted in the gap. Calculate the values of original
capacitance and change in capacitance for the same displacement. Also calculate the ratio of
per unit change of capacitance to per unit change of displacement. Dielectric constant of mica
is 8.
