Iron Study

The iron study report analyzes the iron levels of a 54-year old female patient. Key tests were performed to measure serum iron, UIBC, TIBC, and transferrin saturation percentage. The results found the patient's iron levels to be within normal ranges on all parameters tested. In conclusion, the patient's iron study showed no deficiencies, and she was advised to continue her current diet and supplements.

IRON STUDY REPORT ABSTRACT

BY

T SREE VAISHNAVI

BBA 001

A) Basic design and the overall purpose of the Iron Study:

Iron is a mineral in a human body that comes from food he/she takes. One need iron to make Red
Blood Cells (RBC). Iron is also an important part of Haemoglobin, a protein in blook that helps carry
oxygen from lungs to the rest of the body. Iron is found in Cereals (bajra, ragi, millets, Legumes
(lentils, peas, chickpeas, beans & soyabeans), Tofu, Grean Leafy Vegetables, Nuts and other Oil Seeds.

An Iron Test can show if one has too much or too little of the mineral in the system. It can check for
conditions like anemia or iron overload (excess iron).

The symptoms of either conditions are given below :

Symptoms of low iron include : Symptoms of high iron include :

- Tiredness - Joint pain
- Dizziness - Tiredness
- Weakness - Weakness or a lack of energy
- Headaches - Stomach pain
- Paled skin
- Fast heartbeat

Evaluation of iron status can be done by doing the following tests.

Test name Purpose

Serum Iron Measures the level of iron in the liquid part of ones blood
UIBC One’s blood serum has considerable extra Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC)
TIBC Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) is a good indirect measurement or transferrin
(main transport of iron). When iron capacity is low, transferrin level increases.
When iron is high, it shows transferrin levels are low.
Transferrin It represents the % of transferrin that is saturated with iron.
saturation %

B) Problems investigated and the major findings found as a result of my study:

I carried out the above Iron Study in the case of a Female Patient, Ms. RT Vimal, aged 54 years, on
5th March 2022, whose medical results show the following on various parameters mentioned above.
Iron Study Test Name Value Unit Bio Ref Interval
Serum Iron 110.10 ug/dl 60 – 180
UIBC 246.30 ug/dl 155 – 355
Serum Total Iron Binding Capacity 356.40 ug/dl 250 – 400
(TIBC)
Transferrin Saturation % 30.89 % 15 - 50
(Contd…2…)

(Page No.2)

C) Test-wise brief summary of my interpretations:

Test My Interpretation
Serum Iron The level of iron in the patient’s blood is 110.10 ug/dl, which is within the
permissible interval.
UIBC The patient has sufficient extra iron binding capacity of 246.30 ug/dl which is an
allowable permissible limit
TIBC Blood’s capacity to bind iron with transferrin is 356.40 ug/dl, which is an
acceptable limit.
Transferrin The % of transferrin that is saturated with iron in case of the patient referred is
saturation % 30.89% (against acceptable limit of 15 – 50%).

D) Conclusion:

In all parameters that are required to be done, every thing looks good in the case of above patient and
no shortfall is found on the Iron Study carried out. Hence, she is advised to continue taking food with
iron supplements as done earlier.
