Aerial Ropeway Systems Guide

The document discusses aerial ropeways, which are suitable for transporting people and materials over difficult, hilly terrain where road and rail transportation is challenging. It describes the key components of ropeway systems including trestles, cables, terminal stations, traction sheaves, and carriers. Two common ropeway configurations are presented: monocable jig back systems which use two cabins attached to opposite sides of a single rope, and bicable jig back systems which use a haulage rope with spaced carriers running on a track rope. Design features of the ropes, carriers, grip mechanisms, and trestles are outlined. Advantages of ropeways include safety, capacity, ability to span long distances, and suitability for

Suitability / applicability
 Difficult in transportation in hilly terrain
 Operation of road / rail is difficult
 Long and constant distance

Aerial Ropeways
 Trestles
 Cables
 Terminal stations
 Traction sheaves
 Rocking saddles
 Traction rope
 Tract ropes
 Pulley
 Buckets

Material Ropeway
 Monocable / Bicable cable
 reversible/unidirectional
 Power / gravity
 Permenent / temp
 Men / material

Monocable Jig Back System

 Two cabins firmly attached to the rope, one at each terminal

station but on the opposite sides.

 Once the cabins reach the respective terminal, the system

stops automatically.

 Simple operation. Less expensive. Ideally suitable for hilly,

undulating terrain. But limited carrying capacity.

Bicable Jig Back System

 In this system a single endless continuous moving haulage
rope are attrached, spaced at equal intervals and the cabins
are supported on a track rope.
 The in coming cabin to the terminal stations and disengages
from the rope and moves on the shut rail.

 Low operation and maintenance cost.

 Comfortable boarding / deboarding and ride.
 Low ground clearance not required

Track and traction ropes

 Track rope should smooth exterior surface.
 Hold vibrations
 Resist bending and crushing stress
 20 to 65 mm dia and weight 3 to 27 kg/m
 Breaking strength 60 – 400 t

 Traction rope dia 12- 32 mm and barking load 6 to 70 t.

Carriers
 Two wheel or four wheel
 0.25 to 1 m3
 Carrying capacity 0.5 to 1.5 t.

 Gravity operated grip on track rope.

 It having two jaws, one is welded to the upper part of the
hanger while other is mounted on the lever which turn about
axis.

Trestles
 Used for supporting the track and traction ropes as well as
giving profile to ropeways.
 Their height and construction depend on the distance to be
maintained between the track ropes and nature of terrain.
 Distance between gauge is usually 2.5 to 3 m.
 Height is generally 8- 12 m and spaced 100 -250 m.
 Wood, steel, and steel-reinforced cement concrete.

Advantages
 High safety
 High Carrying capacity
 Long routs can be implemented
 Use in hilly terrains
 Continuous transport
 Low space require along the route

Limitations
 Bucket have limited capacity
 They can not transport heavy equipment
 Initial cost is high and installation is diffiucult
