Biography of the Social Work Policy MakerWilliam Edward Burghardt Du Bois, better know as
W.E.B Du Bois was an American writer, professor, sociologist, philanthropist, and activist. Du
Bois lives worked changed not only the way that the Western Civilization viewed African
Americans but how they view themselves. Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts,
on February 23, 1868 to parentsAlfred Du Bois, and mother Mary Silvina Burghardt. With the
encouragement of his mother Du Bois became the first person in his family to attend high school.
In 1883 Du Bois began to write articles for respected papers like The New York Globe and
TheFreeman. Fisk, an all-black University, located in Nashville Tennessee, was the first
University that Du Bois attended. Tuition was paid for by multiple churches in the area.
During that time Du Bois became an editor for the Herald, the student magazine.
