3 Technical Description
3.1 Functional Description
The Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200 is designed for electro-acoustic vertical
range measurement under water.
The system measures the distance between the installation location of the transducer
and the sea bed, and hence calculates the depth under keel. The depth information is
calculated from the time between the transmission of a sonar pulse (underwater sound)
and the arrival of the reflected sound waves. The depth data are displayed as an echo-
gram and as a numerical value on the monitor of the Navigation Echo Sounder
ELAC LAZ 5200.

NOTICE
Damage to the transducers possible!
The output of a transmission signal against air can result in damage to the connected
transducers.
The system may only be activated when the transducers are completely immersed
in water.
NOTICE
Damage to the transducers possible!
As soon as the device is switched on, it transmits signals continuously. Transmitting of
signals with the wrong transducer configuration can result in damage to the transducers
and the device.
Connect the transducers to the system only after configuration.
Carry out changes to the transducer configuration only with the transducers discon-
nected from the system.
After the booting of the device, the display area is blank. No data stored earlier are dis-
played when the device is rebooted.
At each reboot, the device starts with the settings active before switching off. One ex-
ception is the display colour. The display colour is reset to the default setting "Day" at
each reboot of the device.
6.5.3 Switching OFF the Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200
If the [OFF] key is released before the device has shut down, the device continues with
normal operation.
The settings made are saved when the device is switched off. One exception is the dis-
play colour. The display colour is reset to the default setting "Day" at each reboot of the
device.
Menu items that have a sub-menu are indicated by the symbol ">>" on the right-hand
side.
Menu items marked with a lock symbol have to be unlocked before changes can be
made in the corresponding sub-menu ( [Link] "Unlocking a Sub-menu"). Changes in
these menus may only be made by qualified personnel.
Pressing the [ESCAPE] key in the "MAIN MENU" closes the menu [Link].
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
WARNING!
Unauthorised changes can result in serious injury or even death.
Unauthorised modification of settings in a locked menu can endanger the safety of the
ship and result in serious injury or even death. In addition, the device and the transduc-
ers can be damaged if the device is operated with the wrong settings.
Changes to settings in locked menus may only be made by qualified personnel.
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
Unlocking sub-menu
The sub-menu remains unlocked as long as the menu is open. If the menu is closed and
then opened again, the sub-menu has to be unlocked again.

The menu is only closed when the blue cursor is in the "MAIN MENU". If the cursor is in
a sub-menu, the [ESCAPE] key has to be pressed accordingly until the menu is closed.
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
If the depth measuring range is significantly larger than the actual depth, it is possible
that the Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200 does not find the sea bed and a yel-
low question mark is displayed in the information field instead of the depth ( [Link]
"Information Field").
The depth measuring range can also be set automatically using the "Auto Mode" func-
tion ( [Link] "Activation of the "Auto Mode" Function").
If the largest depth measuring range has been selected and the [RANGE] key (down)
is pressed again, the automatic depth measuring range function is activated and the de-
vice initially sets the depth measuring range to 200 m.
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
When the "Auto Gain" function is deactivated, the reception gain can be set manually.
A description of manual setting of the reception gain can be found in section [Link].
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
When the "Auto Gain" function is activated, the reception gain can still be set manually.
The "Auto Gain" function ensures only that the maximum gain level does not become
too large or too small. For this reason it is possible that the manually set reception gain
is immediately changed again automatically.
A description of activation and deactivation of the “Auto Gain” function can be found in
section [Link] "Activating and Deactivating the "Auto Gain" Function".
Fig. 6.42: Display in the Display Area
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
Automatic setting of the depth measuring range functions only in a range between 50
and 200 m. With greater depths ( 300), the depth cannot be measured automatically.
In this case, a larger depth measuring range can be set manually [Link].
If the depth measuring range has been set using the "Auto Mode" function, the letter “A”
is displayed alongside the maximum value of the depth measuring range.
In 2-channel mode, the larger depth measuring range is set automatically if the two
channels measure different depths.

ed echogram with any set marking lines is shown in the display area. The information
in the information field as well as the date, time and position data refer to the first data set
on the right-hand side of the display area. If the cursor is displayed, the information refers
to the data set marked by the cursor.
The intervals on the time axis in the history are always 5 seconds per pixel column, irre-
spective of the depth measuring range set at the time.
If a depth alarm is triggered while the history is open, the history is automatically closed.
Refer to protection notice ISO 16016
A description of printing out the history can be found in section 6.5.9 "Print

The possible fouling (e.g. algae, crustaceans, mussels, barnacles) depends on the type
of ship, operational intensity and the channel travelled and varies with fresh and salt wa-
ter, according to the lay and travel times, water temperature and solar irradiation.
2.1. Carefully remove coarse fouling using a plastic spatula. Move the spatula at
an oblique angle over the transducer radiation surface in order not to cause
scores.
2.2. Carefully remove the remaining fouling using a suitable cleaning tool (e.g.
sponge, brush). Clean the surface in a circular motion and do not apply more
pressure than necessary.
NOTICE
Damage to the transducer possible!
The surface of the transducer is delicate and can be easily damaged.
Do not use high-pressure or steam cleaners, metallic objects or solvent-based
cleaning additives for cleaning.

9.3.12 PELACSDS
PELACSDS is a proprietary NMEA data set that allows the depth information from two
channels to be output. In addition to the depth information, the data set contains informa-
tion on the installation position of the transducer.
The data set is only transmitted by the Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200. In 2-
channel mode, the data are transmitted alternately from the two channels. A distinction
can be made between the channels using the transducer position.
The data set contains the following information:
$PELACSDS,k,x.x,d.d,-t.t,m,g,r*hh<CR><LF>

Item Description
Transducer position
• S = Starboard
• P = Port
• B = Bow
• A = Aft
• 0 = not selected
If both longitudinal direction and transverse direction are set for a transducer,
only the transverse direction is transmitted here.

9.6 Redundancy
Redundancy can be created for the Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200 in the fol-
lowing ways:
• Through the use of the 2-channel variant of the Navigation Echo Sounder
ELAC LAZ 5200.
• Through the parallel use of two Navigation Echo Sounders ELAC LAZ 5200.
There are no further redundancies.
Correct transducer configuration is crucial as transmitting signals with incorrect settings can damage both the transducers and the device. The system should only operate with appropriate transducer parameters, emphasizing the need for precise configuration to maintain device integrity.
Unauthorized changes to configuration parameters can lead to severe safety risks, including endangerment of the ship and potentially causing serious injury or death. Therefore, changes should only be made by qualified personnel and only when modifications to the system, such as a transducer model change, justify it. This ensures the safety of both personnel and equipment.
The "Auto Gain" function provides automatic adjustment of the reception gain, which should ideally be activated to maintain optimal signal processing conditions. This function enhances the usability of the device by adapting to varying signal conditions without manual intervention, promoting efficiency and accuracy in measurements.
Missing or improperly performed earthing can result in dangerous electric shocks, accidents, and falls. It is essential to ensure that all required earthing connections are performed properly before connecting the unit to the power supply.
The Navigation Echo Sounder ELAC LAZ 5200 is intended for vertical range measurements under water, helping calculate the depth under the keel. Misuse, such as using it near marine life or divers, can lead to legal and safety violations. The manufacturer bears no liability for damages due to improper use, which emphasizes the criticality of adhering to intended operational guidelines to prevent environmental and safety hazards.
Different display colours such as Day, Dusk, and Night modes improve visibility under various lighting conditions and reduce eye strain. Selecting appropriate display settings enhances usability and operational efficiency, especially during night operations or adverse weather conditions where ambient lighting varies significantly.
The use of personal protective equipment is crucial in preventing injuries and health impairment that cannot be eliminated by other technical or organizational measures. PPE provides protection against risks associated with various maintenance activities on the ELAC LAZ 5200, ensuring worker safety.
The depth measuring range should be set according to the expected depths to achieve the best resolution. If the range significantly exceeds the actual depth, the device may fail to find the sea bed, displaying a yellow question mark instead of the depth. Optimizing the range ensures effective operation and accurate measurements.
To prevent damage to transducer cables, avoid lifting or transporting transducers using the cables, adhere to minimum bending radii, and ensure strain relief by the shipyard. Additionally, cables should not be fastened with metal ties or laid over sharp edges to prevent physical damage.
The ELAC LAZ 5200 operates its serial interfaces with the 8-N-1 setting, which includes 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit, in accordance with standardized protocols like the NMEA 0183. This standardization ensures reliable communication and compatibility with other maritime electronics, supporting consistent and error-free operation.
