The Municipality of Sinacaban is a 5th class municipality in the


Province of Misamis Occidental, Philippines. It is politically subdivided
into 17 Barangay’s.

was just a tiny obscure of the barrio of

The History of
Sinacaban
At its early days, catching crabs, (locally known as
“alimango,” found in abundance in the swampy lands, thrived
by nipa and bakhaw), was the favorite hobby and livelihood
of the inhabitants, who migrated from Bohol, Cebu and
Siquijor.

According to the stories, while the


civil guards were going around, they
found two men who had just caught a
crab. The Spaniards asked the crab
catchers what’s the name of the place
was. "Ah, Sinakbang Señor!" answer of
those who believe that they were asked
what they were carrying.

Mangrove Crabs
The instrument for catching is called
“SAKBANG.” The caught crabs are
called “sinakbang” or caught thru
“sakbang.”

History of Sinacaban

The episode of its creation into a municipality, had been


traditionally related that a group of daring men, led by a World
War II veteran, guerilla Captain Sofronio K. Avanceña,

creating Sinacaban into a
regular municipality,

bank of Palilan river branch 2,400 meters South Westerly to point “3”

Misamis Occidental-Zamboanga boundary, and on the East, by the
limits of municipal water which the municipality of Sinacaban shall have.”

SINAKBANG FESTIVAL
•Sinakbang festival is the
Festival we celebrated every August
28-30 . It is dedicated in honor of the
patron saints of the town and of its
different barangays, as a gesture of
thanksgiving for the bountiful blessings
they have received from the Almighty.
