Draft Net

A computer network connects computing devices like desktops, laptops, smartphones and servers so they can communicate and share information. There are four main types of computer networks: local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN), and personal area networks (PAN). For the Matara branch, which is in a 3-story building, the most suitable network type would be a LAN since it has low cost and is easy to control for a smaller area like a building.

Computer Network.

A computer network is a system that connected computing device (desktop, laptops,

smartphones, servers ) two or more that communicate with one another. They are sharing
information.

Advantages and disadvantages in Networking

Advantages Disadvantage
Anyone can connect to the computer Virus and malware
Ecommerce Cost of the networks
Easy to share information Hackers
Access for database Security

Computer network systems types

A computer network is computers link to each other as a group and that computers communicate
and share their data, resources, applications with another computers. There are four main types
of computer network.

1. LAN (Local Area Network)

2. WAN (Wide Area Network
3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
4. PAN (Personal Area Network)
LAN ( Local Area Network )

A local area network is group of computers connected to web and internal severs within a one
building, university, school, or library and that can be access to routers, cables and switches
enable devices to connect servers.

Advantage Disadvantage
Low cost Its cover a small area
Easy to control Difficult to set LAN setup
Easy and fast communication Security problems of data

WAN ( Wide Area Network )

A network that spans a very wide region, such as a whole country, continent, or perhaps the
entire world. Enables the transmission of data or information over great distances.
Advantage Disadvantage
wide geographic area is covered Firewall and antivirus software are required.
sharing of resources and software Maintenance Issues

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

A network that covers a town or city-sized geographic area. provides cable TV and other
services, as well as high-speed Internet connectivity over DSL or ADSL lines.

Advantage Disadvantage
Less costly Difficult to manage
Greater than WAN speed Different interne speed

PAN (Personal Area Network)

A PAN can be anywhere in size from a few centimeters and a few meters. It’s connects
electronic devices within a user's immediate area.
Advantage Disadvantage
Connect to several devices at once slowly transfer data
Easy to use In terms of communication equipment, expensive

In these network types what type should be implemented in Matara branch?

In Matara branch is a 3-story building. So, we must look for the network types and
realize what types are the match. The most important for a building is the LAN type. According
to advantages and disadvantages of network types of LAN have low cost and easy to control. So
more suitable for this Matara branch is LAN network type.

IEEE Ethernet standards

Networking standards
Networking standards establish the requirements for data transmission necessary for device
interoperability and are the foundation upon which all networks are formed. The official
organizations that issue regulated standards are,

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

International Organization for standardization (ISO)

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

What is IEEE Ethernet standers?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is a worldwide

association and organization of professionals dedicated to the creation, implementation, and
upkeep of technologically oriented goods and services. IEEE is a nonprofit organization founded
in 1963. Its main focus is on advancing the electrical and electronic development sector through
innovation, instruction, and standardization.

IEEE 802 Standards

The IEEE Computer Society launched Project 802 in 1985 with the goal of
establishing standards that would allow devices from various manufacturers to communicate
with one another. It is an alternative method of describing the roles played by the physical layer
and data link layer of major LAN protocols.
