1 4 Distance

The document provides examples of using the distance formula to calculate distances between points on a coordinate plane. It gives the solutions and distances for points such as J and K, points X and Z, and the starting and ending points of a spiral. Distances calculated include the flight of a bird between locations in kilometers and the distance a baseball was thrown from third base. It also discusses finding points that satisfy given distance conditions and determining if two figures have congruent sides.

Distance

Find the distance between each pair of points.

23.

SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula.

The distance between J and K is about 9.4 units.

26. X( 3, 8), Z( 5, 1)

SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula.

The distance between X and Z is about 7.3 units.

27. SPIRALS  Denise traces the spiral shown in the figure. The spiral begins at the origin. What is the shortest
distance between Denise's starting point and her ending point?

SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula to find distance from the beginning point (0, 0) to the ending point (2, ‒4).

The shortest distance between Denise's starting point and her ending point is approximately 4.5 units.

28. ZOOLOGY  A tiny songbird called the blackpoll warbler migrates each fall from North America. A tracking study
showed one bird flew from Vermont at map coordinates (63, 45) to Venezuela at map coordinates (67, 10) in
three days. If each map coordinate represents 75 kilometers, how far did the bird travel? Round to the nearest
kilometer.

SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula to find the distance from (63, 45) to (67, 10).

Since each unit on the coordinate grid represents 75 km, multiply to find the distance in kilometers the warbler
travels.
75  ≈ 2642 km

30. SPORTS  The distance between each base on a baseball infield is 90 feet. The third baseman throws a ball from
third base to point P. To the nearest foot, how far did the player throw the ball?

SOLUTION:

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance from 3rd base to point P.

The player threw the ball 150 feet.

Name the point(s) that satisfy the given condition.
44. two points on the x-axis that are 10 units from (1, 8)
SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula.

The solutions are x = 7 and x = ‒5, therefore the points are (7, 0) and (‒5, 0).

45. two points on the y-axis that are 25 units from (‒24, 3)
SOLUTION:

Use the Distance Formula.

The solutions are y = 10 and y = ‒4, therefore the points are (0, 10) and (0, ‒4).

46. Refer to the figure. Are   and   congruent?

SOLUTION:
Because the distance from V to the origin is 2a, V is at (-2a, 0). T is at (3a, 0). Use the Distance Formula to find VT.

VT is 5a units in length.

S is at (0, 4a) and U is at (0, -a). Use the Distance Formula to find SU.

SU is 5a units in length.

VT = SU
By definition of congruence,  .

48. ART  A terracotta below artifact has a triangular pattern around the top, as shown. All the triangles are about the
same size and can be represented on a coordinate plane with vertices at points (0, 6.8), (4.5, 6.8), and (2.25, 0).
If each unit represents 1 centimeter, what is the approximate perimeter of each triangle, to the nearest tenth of a
centimeter?

The perimeter of each triangle is 7.16 +7.16 + 4.5 = 18.82, or about 18.8 units. Since each unit on the coordinate
plane represents 1 centimeter, 18.8 units multiplied by 1 centimeter means that the perimeter of each triangle is
approximately 18.8 cm.

49. ANALYZE  Consider rectangle QRST with QR = ST = 4 centimeters and RS = QT = 2 centimeters. If point U is
on   such that QU = UR and point V is on   such that RV = VS, then is   congruent to  ? Justify your
argument.
SOLUTION:

QU + UR = QR = 4 and QU = UR, so QU = 2.
RV + VS = RS = 2, and RV = VS, so RV = 1.
Since QU ≠ RV,   is not congruent to  .
