What is Pelletization?
The process of Pelletization helps converting Iron Ore Fines into “Uniform Size Iron Ore Pellets” that can be
fed in the blast furnaces or in the DRI kiln (DRI).
Why Pelletization?
Pelletization is the only answer to a major question of preserving our precious iron ore and using it wisely.
Advantages of Pellets:
Pellets are uniformely sized, with purity of 63%- 68% contributing to faster reduction and high
metallization rates.
Pellets with their high, uniform mechanical strength and high abrasive strength increase
production of sponge iron by 25% to 30% with same amount of fuel.
Standardization - Uniform size range, generally within a range of 9-16 mm.
Purity - 63% to 68 % iron, mainly
(Fe2O3).
Cost-effectiveness - There is no loss of handling iron ore, as pellets will not break during transport or
handling. Reduces coal consumption in spong iron making with lower fines generation. Maintenance cost
is low as there is not need for crushing and screening of iron ore lumps.
Strength - High and uniform mechanical strength even under thermal stress.
Productivity:
A wholesome 20-25% increase in sponge iron making. A perceptible improvement in productivity of iron
making through blast furnace route due to the uniformity of pellets which results in better permeability .
DEFINITION OF SINTERING:
Sintering is a process of agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous and lumpy mass by incipient
fusion caused by heat produced by combustion of solid fuel within the mass itself.
Sinter: It is the product of sintering. It is a porous mass.
ADVANTAGE OF SINTER
i) Agglomeration of fines into hard, strong and irregular porous lumps which gives better bed
permeability
ii) Elimination of 60 - 70 % of sulphur and Arsenic (if present) during sintering.
iii) Elimination of moisture, hydrated water and other volatiles on the sinter strand with a cheaper
fuel.
iv) Increased the softening temperature and narrowing down of the softening range.
vi) It increases the Blast Furnace productivity.
vii) Lime rich bosh slag hinders reduction of silica, absorbs vaporized silicon and sulphur to
produce low- Si, low-S iron.
viii) Increase of sinter percentage in Blast Furnace burden, increases the permeability,Open in App

and heating rate or burden increases, so the productivity5 also.
ix) Utilization of solid wastes generate within steel works.
DISADVANTAGE OF SINTER
100% sintered (iron ore) can not be charged in the blast furnace. By sintering one can not create
uniform sizes.
FUTURE OF SINTERING
• The future of sintering and pelletising is directly related to the future of the iron making processes that
use sinter and pellets, mainly the Blast furnace and DR process.
• The future of these processes in turn depends upon steel
• production and consumption, which have been on an upward trend.
• Environmental interest
• Commitments to minimize CO2 emission mainly by striving to minimize overall energy consumption.
i hope it helps you .
Thank you .

1.Pellets are spherical agglomerates whereas sinters are irregular shaped agglomerates.
2. In pellets porosity is more at surface whereas in sinter porosity is spread almost homogeneously .
3. Pellet is made in the presence of moisture and binder with subsequent induration at 1300°C whereas
sinter is prepared in sintering Dwight Lloyd machine.
4. Pellet has more thermal efficiencies as compared to sinter.
5. Generally avg. Diameter of pellet is smaller than the sinter.

How many pellets are in an M1028 canister round? How big in diameter is each pellet?
The M1028 is a 120mm shell for the M1 tank. The shell holds 1100 10mm tungsten balls. They are
apparently lethal up to 700m (765 yards).
