Date: Tues.26/04/22
Topic: Asexual Reproduction/ Mitosis
Problem Statement: A student playing around at home cut the top
of a palm and a coleus plant (Joseph coat of many colours) which
both had a small piece of stem and stuck it in the ground of her
garden and after 2 weeks of watering realised that the palm withered
away, while the coleus grew new leaves and roots at the side.
Hypothesis: The coleus plant should produce a new plant with new roots, leaves and a loner
stem through means of vegetative propagation as it contains meristematic cells
which facilitate growth whereas the palm plant does not contain meristematic
cells so it shouldn’t be able to generate a new plant through vegetative
propagation.
Aim: To investigate which of the two plants, coleus or palm, will generate a new plant
from vegetative propagation.
Apparatus & Material: 2 identical, medium sized flowering pots, clippers, water, loam soil,
coleus plant, palm plant
Method: 1) Prepare a palm and coleus cutting by cutting off a section of the plant just below
the node of the stem
2)Add damp soil to the bottom of each of the flowering pots.
3) Plant the coleus cutting in one flowering pot and the palm plant cutting in the
other. Label each flowering pot with the name of the plant that is placed in it.
4) Place both the cuttings in an area exposed to sunlight.
5) Observe each cutting for 14 days and record any changes in a table.
Variables: Manipulated - the type of plant
Responding - the growth of the cutting
Controlled - the environment the cuttings are placed in, the amount of water each
cutting receives, the type of soil the cuttings are placed in.
Expected Results: It is expected that the coleus plant will produce multiple leaves and have
a stem with the greater length after the 14 day period has ended. On the
other hand it is expected that there will be little to no growth of new leaves
or stems on the cutting of the palm plant after the 14 day period.

Limitations: 1) Other factors can affect the growth of a plant such as environmental
conditions and invasion of parasites which cannot be controlled by the
experimenter.
2) The parent plant could have been previously genetically modified to grow at
a faster rate than usual.
Precaution:1) Ensure that the parent plant used is disease-free and is in good condition.
2) Ensure that the water used to water the plants is clean and uncontaminated.
