SOPof Flash Point (ASTM D93 &D92)

The document outlines the standard operating procedure for determining the flash point of an oil sample using an ASTM flash point apparatus. It describes cleaning the test cup, filling it with the sample, heating it at a controlled rate while applying an ignition source, and recording the temperature when a flash is observed. It also provides equations for correcting the observed flash point for differences in ambient barometric pressure.

Standard Operating Procedure for Flash point

(ASTM D93 &D92).

Aim: To determine the flash point of oil sample.

Requirements: Flashpoint apparatus, IPA

Procedure:
1. Cleaning of the flash point test cup is essential for a successful test.
2. Fill the cup so that the top of the meniscus is exactly at the filling line. Place the test
cover on the test cup and place the assembly into the apparatus.
3. The temperature of the test cup and test specimen shall be at least 18 ° C below the
expected flash point. Insert the thermometer into its holder and start stirring the
sample with the stirrer.
4. Apply heat initially so that the rate of temperature rise of the sample is 5-6 ° C per
minute.
5. If the test specimen is expected to have flash point of 110° C apply the ignition source
when the temperature of the test specimen is 23° C below the expected flash point
and each time thereafter at a temperature reading of 1° C .
6. Record the observed flash point temperature on the thermometer when a flash
appears at any point on the surface of the oil.

Calculation:
Observe and record ambient barometric pressure at the time of test. When pressure differs
from 101.3 kPa, correct the flash point by either of the following equations:

Corrected flash point = C + 0.25 (101.3 – K)

Corrected flash point = C + 0.033 (760 –P)
Where, C =observed flash point, °C
P = ambient barometric pressure, mm Hg
K = ambient barometric pressure, kPa

Report: Report corrected flash point.
