LESSON3.1:
EDGE STITCHING

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The unit method of construction of a ladies’ skirt is a systematic way of
making garment step-by-step. This method saves the sewer a lot of time
because handling of the garment is lessened to a minimum. Because of this,
the garment does not wrinkle and stretch too much. In this method, the
garment is constructed by units. Each section of the garment like the front
shirt and back shirt even the garter casing is sown by units. All stitching and
pressing are completed in each unit before the other units are made. Units
that are completed are joined to other units are made. Units that are
completed are joined to other units and this will produce a new unit of the
garment.
The garment can be made piece by piece so you make one unit at a
time. Short period of time can be used to complete one unit and the other
units may be set aside for another day. Because of this, sewing can be inserted
into your daily work schedule.

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1.1
In assembling your garterized skirt if there is no available sewing
machine you may apply hand sewing such as durable running stitches or
back stitches in all the procedure in finishing or sewing your project.
Types of Hand Stitches
Running Stitch
An in-and-out even stitch. It is very closely related to an even
basting stitch, but stitches are smaller and usually permanent.
Use single thread. The running stitches used for:
• easing
• very fine gathering.
• hand darning.
• very delicate sewing such as fine
seaming and tucking

Back Stitch
A very strong, secure stitch. Stitches are even and evenly spaced
on the top side of the fabric. On the back or underside, the stitches
overlap slightly. The stitch is used:
• to hold fabric pieces together firmly–sew
or repair seams.

5
• in place of machine stitching in
handmade garments.
• as under stitching for delicate garments
or a difficult-to-reach location.
• to put a zipper in by hand.

Edge Stitching
An edge stitch is a straight line of stitch made along the edge of
a fabric (usually a folded edge) or the ditch of a seam (on the face of the
fabric), at about 1/8 inch from the seamline or the edge. It is basically
topstitching and is done as a reinforcing stitch as well as a decorative
stitch. An edge stitch is a straight line of stitch made along the edge of
a fabric (usually a folded edge) or the ditch of a seam (on the face of the
fabric), at a distance of about 1/8 inch from the seamline or the edge.
It is basically topstitching and is done as a reinforcing stitch as well as
a decorative stitch.

6
Activity 1.2
Apply edge stitching on raw edge of the side seam. Follow the above
procedure in edge stitching. If your fabric has a clean selvage, edge stitching
is not necessarily applied. If there is no available sewing machine, you can do
it with hand sewing simple back stitching or durable running stitches. Always
check you work before proceeding to the next step. You can ask the help of
your parent or older sibling to check your work.
Activity 1.3
Make use of scoring rubric in evaluating your work. Take a screenshot
of your evaluation and send it to your teacher.

LESSON 3.2:
SEWING THE SIDE SEAM AND
PRESS SEAM ALLOWANCE

ACTIVITIES
Activity 2.1
Three ways in joining and sewing the side seam
1. French Seam – a seam within a seam usually applied on a light
weight material
2. Flat Fell Seam – a seam made by placing one edge inside a folded
edge of fabric, then stitching the fold down.
3. Plain Seam - is a simple seam usually applied on a skirt or blouses.
The raw edge can be finished with turn-edge or over edge stitches.

Note: In our project we are going to apply plain seam with edge stitching.

LESSON3.5:
FINISHED THE HEM WITH THE
TURN EDGE STITCH

ACTIVITIES
Activity 5.1
Machine Hemming: sew the bottom hem using a sewing machine.
Procedure:
STEP 1 STEP 2

Fold half of the bottom hem Fold it again to make the hem
allowance. Do it around the line durable (2 folds). Do it evenly
bottom hem. around the bottom hem with the
aid of pins.
STEP 3 STEP 4

Close the bottom hem by sewing Finished bottom hem evenly and

Hand Hemming
The reality in sewing is that even if you have fancy sewing machines
there are still many moments when hand sewing is the best option specially
if you would like to take a more couture approach to your garment making, it
relies entirely on hand stitching.

22
Procedure:
STEP 1 Press your hem following the instructions of the
pattern you are making. In this example, I
pressed the hem .1/2″ to the wrong side, then
another 1 1/2″. Knot the end of the thread and
thread a hand sewing needle appropriate for the
type of fabric you are sewing with. Insert the
needle in between the layers of the first and
second fold of the hem, then poke the needle
through the top fold and exit the fabric so the
thread is coming directly out of the fold and the
knot is hidden inside the hem itself.
STEP 2 Insert the needle just above the fold and catch
a tiny section of the main fabric, creating a very
tiny dot on the right side of the garment. Ideally
your thread would match the fabric and this dot
would appear invisible. For my example, I am
using a contrast thread so you can see the
stitches.
STEP 3 Pull the thread through the fabric, forming the
dot that you started in step 2. Pull the threads
firmly, but not too tight as to make the fabric
pucker.

STEP 4 Insert the needle into the underside of the hem

so that the dot made in step three is centered
between the stitches on the fold. In this
example, I’m flipping the fold forward so you
can see it clearly, but ideally yours is flat and
taut against the garment.
STEP 5 Pull the thread through the fold, creating one
full stitch. Again, pull it taut but not so tight as
to make the fabric gather up.

STEP 6 Complete the second stitch by again passing

the needle from the underside of the hem fold
to the front of the hem and pull firm. Repeat the
process over and over until you have gone all
the way around the hem of the garment.

Activity 5.2
Sew the bottom hem correctly to follow the above procedure. Always check
your work before proceeding to the next step. You can ask the help of your
parent or older sibling to check your work.

LESSON 3.6:
PRESS FINISHED SKIRT

ACTIVITIES
Activity 6.1
Objective: Read and analyze the steps in ironing garment.
Procedure:
General Techniques to gain skill in pressing, you need both the
right equipment and the “know-how.” No amount of careful cutting,
fitting and construction can make up for too much, too little or incorrect
pressing.

Practice the procedures listed here and you will soon become an expert.

1. Before pressing the garment you are making, always test-press a

scrap of the fabric first. Set the heat indicator for the type of fiber.
For a blend, set the indicator for the fiber requiring the lower
temperature. For example, a polyester-wool blend usually should be
pressed at the temperature polyester requires. Test the fabric for the
amount of moisture, if any, needed to shape it. Also check to see
which type of press cloth gives the best results.

2. Thorough pressing during each construction step contributes to a

precision look. It makes following each construction step easier, thus
saving you time. Very little final pressing is necessary for a garment
that has been properly pressed while being made.

3. True pressing calls for a lowering and lifting (up and down) motion.
This flattens the seam or molds the detail without stretching the
seam or distorting the grain. Never push or drag the iron over the
fabric

4. All pressing should be done with the grain, just as in stitching. Press
seams from the wide to the narrow part of the garment--from the
hem to the waist of the skirt, from the neck to the sleeves at the
shoulder, toward the point of a dart, etc.

5. Press curved seams and shaped areas over a pressing ham, roll or
cushion (Figure1). This helps mold the garment to the figure. It also
helps the garment hold its shape.

27
6. Generally speaking, most pressing is done on the wrong side of the
garment when possible. If moisture is needed, use a steam iron or a
damp cloth. For best results, dampen the cloth with a sponge. When
pressing on the right side of the garment, protect the fabric with a
cloth.

7. Press each seam, tuck, or dart before it is joined to a seam or piece

of fabric. Basting threads should be removed before pressing. Steam
pressing over basting stitches will cause markings to appear in the
fabric that, for many fabrics, are almost impossible to remove.

8. Be sure the ironing board pad and cover are completely free of
lumps and folds. Many fabrics will pick up marks or develop a shine
when pressed over any type of unevenness. Keep the soleplate of
the iron clean and free of any scratches.

9. Take care not to over press which can remove surface texture and
create shine.
