When discussing sports, generally only the health benefits, teamwork and competition

come to mind. However, the contributions of sports to development are rarely discussed and
heavily overlooked. Conventionally, in the Caribbean sports has been practised before the arrival
of the Europeans, the Amerindians played a sport called Batos for recreational purposes. With
the arrival of the Europeans sports such as football and cricket were introduced. Such sports has
become the most popular sports in the Caribbean. Even though the Caribbean is relatively small
in size with a small population compared to other regions, some of the world greatest athletes are
produced here such as Usain Bolt and Brian Lara.
Firstly, sports help with the integration movement in the Caribbean, there are many
associations established such as the West Indies Federation which has made attempts to unify the
political and economic systems, as well as establish trade in the region. Generally, Caribbean
people are very competitive especially among other Caribbean people and are boastful about the
achievements of their respective country. This competitive nature can hinder the integration
movement in the region. Due to our shared history, all the Caribbean territories play the same
sports which have become part of cultural identity, this similarity will help built relations
between nations to strive for success and recognition globally. Cricket can be used as an example
of the process of integrational movement in the Caribbean, the West Indies Cricket teams have
achieved success on an international level and boosted the regional pride among Caribbean
people.
Secondly, conventionally agriculture has been the basis of development in the Caribbean
however urbanization has replaced tourism being one of the largest economic sectors,
contributing to significant foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities. Sports has
contributed to the tourism sector, as stated before, the Caribbean has produced some of the best
athletes globally. This attracts foreigners to engage in the different sports practised in the
Caribbean. Additionally, the improvement of infrastructure has been a result of sport tourism.
For instance, in 2007 the ICC Cricket series was held in the Caribbean. New roads, airports and
sporting stadiums were constructed as well as employing constructors and engineers.
Thirdly, sports tourism has also provided educational opportunities for people,
scholarships and university degrees are available for those people who have the interest to go
into the career of sports. There are professions in sports such as a full-time coach or a full-time
sportsman/sportswoman. Their skills are beneficial to their respective country and the extent to
the region and themselves. Fourthly, media outlets earn money from broadcasting and
advertising sporting events. Television Jamaica and the Caribbean Communications Network are
examples of media outlets that buy exclusive rights to the showing of the World Champions and
Olympic games during the staging of the games to showcast Caribbean athletes expecting great
performances for the athletes. Athletes also endorse brands to generate more money from
advertising for these brands than participants in sporting events. In exchange, the brand gets
more publicity.
In conclusion, some of the ways sporting activities have contributed to the economic
development of the Caribbean is through endorsements and advertising. Educational
opportunities and careers paths can be pursued in the sporting sector which can be beneficial for
themselves and the region. Infrastructure has improved the stand of living with better roads and
facilities, also providing employment.
