PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY 1

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY 2

Professional Activity

For my professional activity, I completed five weeks of the Science of Well-being course

offered through Coursera. This course was fully online, and I completed it at home. The five

weeks of content added up to nine hours and eighteen minutes total and took me close to ten

hours to complete. I plan on continuing the rest of this course work in my free time.

The Science of Well-being

The aim of this course to teach participants how to increase their own happiness through

developing positive, productive habits that they can implement in their daily life. This course

also explained some of the unique features of our brain that can result in feelings of inadequacy

or negativity.

Takeaways

The Science of Well-being week two starts off by debunking popular misconceptions

about happiness, and this week introduces the idea of practicing daily gratitude and savoring.

Both of these things I want to work on implementing n my day-to-day life. Often, people think

that money, good grades, a good job, cool things, or a relationship will make them happy, but

these things do not fulfill us. It was interesting to hear that often, among gen Z students, good

grades are universally valued. This is something that I have always struggled with. I feel as

though my grades are one of the only things that have defined me since I started going to school.

I feel like this belief has only been solidified throughout my school career; getting into the

nursing program felt like a battle of the GPAs. Hearing that valuing grades is something that

people my age experience felt oddly comforting.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY 3

Week five, personally my favorite week, dove into the things that actually make us feel

happy and fulfilled in this world. No, you don’t need to get all As in your classes to be happy.

And if you get a poor grade, your world will not crumble, even though you might anticipate that.

One of the things that can truly makes us happy in our lives includes finding things that

utilize our signature strengths, these are personal characteristics you strongly exemplify. For

myself, perspective, honesty, fairness, leadership, and humor are my character strengths. As a

nurse, I should work on implementing these into my nursing practice.

Other activities to increase a person’s happiness that interested me include obtaining the

adequate amount of sleep nightly and meditating daily. I am going to commit to working on both

of these activities throughout the rest of the semester and into my nursing career. If I can fill my

own cup, I will be more able to pour into others.

Concluding Thoughts

I would highly recommend this course to everyone- its content can be implemented

regardless of age, profession, or lifestyle. As a college student, I felt like this content was

especially applicable. All of the content videos are recorded in a Yale classroom with actual

students in attendance. I loved that some of the questions that the college students ask are similar

to those I was having. This course was immensely valuable, and I will continue to implement the

things I have learned through the Science of Well-being.

By learning practices to increase my own happiness, I will be able to combat nurse

burnout as I enter the workforce. I can focus on utilizing my signature strenths as I grow in my

career. My biggest takeaways is that I will be more able to care for patients if I am the happiest,

best version of myself.
