Heritage Literacy and Technology

1. The article discusses how new technologies impact different cultures and generations as older forms are adopted, adapted, or alienated. 2. The main idea is that newer generations will experience more technological advancements that will both impact older generations and cultures, and allow the transfer of knowledge across generations through heritage literacy. 3. An example discussed is an Amish girl who attends public school and uses computers for assignments, showing adoption and adaptation of technology while still maintaining cultural customs at home.

1. This article is about the adoption, adaptation, and alienation of certain technologies and how it
affects different cultures and generations.
2. The main idea is that new generations will experience more technological advancements, and
those advancements will impact older generations and their cultures or religions

The article “Heritage Literacy: Adoption, Adaptation, and Alienation of Multimodal Literacy Tools,” by
Suzanne Kesler Rumsey, is about how changes in technology will affect the different generations as well
as certain cultures or religions. Rumsey writes about how Elaine, who was born into an Amish family,
attended a public school and was using computers to do some of her assignments, even though the
Amish don’t use powered machinery or technology. Rumsey asked Elaine’s mother, Mary, about how
she felt about Elaine using this technology, in which Mary responded by saying “’Well, I don’t know. I
think maybe sometime they might need to use one for a job or something if they work out. That’s why
it's important,’” (Rumsey, 2009, p. 575). Mary is allowing Elaine to use newer technologies in the case
that Elaine has a job that requires that technology, which shows that she is adapting to the newer
technologies around them while still keeping their Amish customs. As Mary keeps the newer
technologies outside of the Amish household, she is alienating these new forms of technology from her
home. Rumsey informs the readers of a term called heritage literacy, where the newer generations will
transfer knowledge from one generation or custom to the next, which is what Elaine provides for her
Amish community. One of my favorite ways that Rumsey shows this off is by mentioning the quilts that
belonged to her grandmother, her mother, and herself. The quilt of Rumsey’s grandmother was pieced
and hand quilted by mostly Amish women, and due to that the quilt was made with only solid colors,
which made it look rather plain. The quilt of Rumsey’s mother was quilted by all of the female members
of the mother’s family, who were not Amish but had enough ties to the Amish culture to make a
traditional quilt. Rumsey made a quilt, but it was not made like the rest of the Amish quilts. Rumsey’s
quilt was made using images and applications, such as Adobe Premier, which requires the use of
technology. This case is a great representation of heritage literacy and how over time, with newer
technologies being introduced, the adoption and adaptation of technology can make something new
with the ideas of different cultures, which is brought about by the newer generations learning and using
these new technologies.
