CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Rationale and Background of the study
Technology has opened up a whole new world that a couple of decades ago, simply
did not exist. Foreign lands and cultures are no longer hidden inside a picture book
or only seen by those with a plane ticket. Rather, the internet has created an avenue
in which anyone can learn about other cultures through a virtual experience.
Technology plays the role of facilitator in educating a student. It enriches the
educational experience providing options that can accommodate students in their
quest to learn. According to a study released by Educause in 2004, technology has
impacted student learning via communications, convenience, and control. The
report represents over 4300 traditionally-aged college students and defines how
they use technology. Even though the report is 13 years old, ironically the
information has remained accurate.
One of the most important things technology has done for student learning is to
increase accessibility. That means the borders have expanded for disabled students
and rural communities. Not having a local college in close proximity to a student’s
home is no longer a challenge. Having to work a full-time job during business
hours and being unable to attend traditional classroom hours can still be a
challenge, but is no longer a roadblock to getting a degree. Even high school
students who are chronically ill or seriously injured and unable to attend classes
can easily access coursework. In addition, they can watch recorded video
instruction or interact live with a teacher and classmates.
Using technology to facilitate student learning has come with many positive
benefits. Students can pick and choose what mediums they prefer to learn content
and maximize their study time. Students have immediate access to anything they
do not understand or want to learn more about. Students are no longer solely
dependent on teachers, parents, or other educated people to be their only source of
information. Students are in charge of their own learning and technology has
leveled the playing field in many ways.
Another negative consequence of technology for student learning is having a
record of foolish things they say and do. These days no matter where you are,
somebody or usually everybody has a device in which to record an event.
Some would argue the internet and technology are fostering laziness and
contributing to the instant gratification nation. Perhaps you’ve thought that same
thing. However, the faster we can get the information, the more time we have to
learn. That’s certainly something to consider.
Theoretical and Conceptual Framework of the Study
The Internet is registering an initial impact on everyday life in Students. Nearly all
Internet users go online to conduct some of their ordinary day-to-day activities,
from mundane tasks to social arrangements to personal recreation. Furthermore,
online report their Internet use affects the proportions of these affairs in their
everyday lives.
The system approach (Input – Process - Output) was used in describing the
conceptual research paradigm of the study. Figure 1 shows the input, process and
output of the research. The input is the profiles of the Junior High School students
of Lyceum – Northwestern University in terms of: age, and gender. The
determining of the responses on the perception of the Junior High school students
and their teachers about the impact of internet among the High school students
along: Personal Factors, Teacher Related, Classroom Circumstances, and Home
Factors, is the process of the study. Lastly, the output of the research is the
suggestive measures to lessen, or eradicate, Internet among human development
students of Lyceum – Northwestern University Special Science High School.

This study is focused and limitedly only on the student’s perception about the
Causes and Effects of Internet as an addicting processing in this generation.
In this research, the researchers only used interview as the method to obtain the
results. There were 10 First year students, 10 Second year students, 10 Third year
students, 10 Fourth year students from Francisco Q. Duque Medical Foundation
Special Science High school of Lyceum North-Western University who are
randomly chosen as respondents for this research.
Definition and Terms
To ensure better understanding of the contents of this study, the following term are
defined operationally or conceptuality:
Virtual - is a technology that facilitates the control of one or more remotely
located computers or servers over the Internet.
Internet - is a network of global exchanges – including private, public,
business, academic and government networks – connected by guided, wireless and
fiber-optic technologies.
Technology - is knowledge or a set of tools that helps make things easier or
resolve problems.
Students – A person formally engaged in learning, especially one enrolled
in a school or colleges.
Academic Performance – Is the extent to which a student, teacher or
institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals.
Viewpoint – Is an attitude of mind, or the circumstances of an individual
that conduce to such an attitude

REVIEW OF RELATED STRUCTURE AND STUDIES
Related Studies
There is no doubt that Information Technology (IT) has tremendously
changed everyday life. New technologies such as computers, Internet, wireless
devices, social networks, have become part of most people’s lives regardless of age
or gender. Consequently, these technologies have changed our lifestyle. Lifestyle
refers to the method and style of our lives including our clothing, habits,
friendships, values and so on (Ye et al., 2011). However, it is not limited to this
definition. Some studies have taken lifestyle to refer to one’s physical and mental
health status, as well as adults’ quality of life (Wang et al., 2012). According to
Leung (1998), lifestyles are identified and classified in order to enhance the
development of social identity through people’s activities, interests and opinions.
Lifestyle can be identified by a wide range of activities, interests, and opinions (Ye
et al., 2011). However, there is a lack of comprehensive research in this area. In
fact, while several researchers have investigated the impact of IT on one dimension
of lifestyle, but no comprehensive research has been undertaken to determine the
impact of Information Technology (IT) on many dimensions of lifestyle from
a holistic perspective. Accordingly, one of the goals of this study is to establish the
various lifestyle dimensions. Another goal is to determine how IT impacts on
lifestyle. Although the impact of IT on learning, health, energy, conditions of
work, social life and so on, has been a topic of research for a long time, no
researcher has undertaken the task of determining the impact of information
technology on people’s lifestyles and on all areas of their lives. This review paper
explores the literature relating to the impact of IT on lifestyle and to analyze and
classify these studies according to various lifestyle dimensions. The dimensions of
lifestyle that will be investigated here are: health, learning, social behavior,
spiritual life, energy, art, work and environment. The paper is organized as
follows: first, the roadmap of research is described; second, the criteria used for
classifying the literature relating to the impact of IT on lifestyle are presented;
third, the results and analysis of the classification are reported; and finally,
conclusions are drawn and future research directions are suggested.

Chapter III
Methodology
The chapter describes the procedure for conducting this
study, specifically; the chapter provided detailed information on
research design, the target population, the sample and sampling
technique, instrumentation and standardization procedure. The
chapter also presented the procedures followed in collecting
data, scoring and method of data analysis.
Research Design
The method used in this research was a Qualitative and
Quantitative Research Design for the most appropriating means of
evaluating the influential factors considered by Junior High
School Students of Lyceum Northwestern University affecting their
daily living. In its popular format, Quantitative is used to
emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,
mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected, while
Qualitative is used to describe ‘what is’ or describe the
characteristics and/or behavior of sample population.
Instrumentation and Data Collection
In order to obtain the data needed, the researchers will
conduct a survey questionnaire by focusing on answering the
problems stated. A survey is an empirical study that uses a
questionnaire to discover descriptive characteristics of phenoma.
The questionnaire for this study has three parts: First, the
profile of the Junior High School students of L-NU; Second, is
the impact of virtual internet technology that affects the daily
life of the respondents; and the Third, if the impact of Virtual
Internet Technology to the students is Negative, what are the
possible solutions to improve your daily living.
Sources of Data
In this study, the Forty (40) respondents from Junior High
School Students will be randomly selected at Lyceum –
Northwestern University at Tapuac District Dagupan City in the
respondents of the investigation.
Tools for Data Analysis
To interpret the data effectively, the researchers will
employ the following statistical treatment: The Percentage and
Weighted Mean are the tools use to interpret data.
To answer sub – problem #1, the researchers will make use of
percentage formula. This will employ to determine the frequency
counts and percentage distribution of personal related variables
respondents.
Formula: % = F N x 100
Where: % is the percentage
F is the frequency
N is the total number of respondents
100 is a constant variable
To answer sub – problem #2 and #3, the researchers will make
use of the Average Weighted Mean. This will be used to determine
the assessment of the respondents with regards to their personal
profiles.
Formula: X = Fx N
Where: X is the weighted mean
F is the frequency
X is the weight of each item
N is the number of cases
The study’s average weighted mean were interpreted using
the following statistical limit constructed by the researchers.
Table I. Statistical Limit Table
