INTRODUCTION
Students can take advantage of technological developments by using media that are
easy and often used in learning, especially in learning English so that it is more fun and not
boring. Currently, there are many media that can be used to improve English speaking skills
such as music, videos, films and so on, as stated by Wright (Wright, 2005) utilizing
technology in learning has become the most discussed topic in the scope of language
teaching. since 1920. Wright also explained that audio-visual media such as films, videos or
DVDs were the media most frequently used as learning resources since 1970 and many
researchers have emphasized the influence of these media on learning.
Film is one of the audio-visual media that can be easily found in everyday life. Malley
(J. Michael O'Malley & Lorraine Valdez Pierce, 1991) defines film as a complete
communication medium and is a very powerful introduction of information. Movies contain
messages, images and ambiguities so they are a rich resource to use in language learning.
Watching movies has become a habit or hobby (hobby) this can be used by language teachers
by presenting authentic learning materials. Koshinsky (Koshinsky, 2008) mentions several
reasons teachers can use films in language learning classes. The first is because films provide
entertainment and learning with a story that can win the hearts of the audience. The second is
because the spoken language in the film is supported by visual elements that make it easier
for students to understand the dialogue and storyline.
Watching English films can be done not only for entertainment purposes but also for
more useful purposes such as enriching vocabulary so as to improve English language skills.
Blake (Blake, 1990) English films show students the natural and genuine English language,
although few scenes are used. Blake added that films or scenes in English are good sources
for vocabulary building activities, class discussions, writing and listening. Therefore, films
are one of the effective media in showing foreign languages to students. To support good
English language skills, lecturers ask students to hone their English speaking skills by getting
used to watching English films using English subtitles. Film can be one of the media or
means of learning. Watching movies is an activity that can be done by anyone from children,
teenagers, to adults. Movies are a hobby for people who like watching movies. But what
needs to be underlined is that the delivery of the storyline in the film that can be used as
learning to speak is an English-language film that uses English subtitles. By using English
subtitles, it is expected that students can find out the meaning of terms, vocabulary, idioms
that are heard and read through running text.
In this study, the researcher wanted to find out how big the relationship is between the habit
of watching English films using English subtitles and the ability to speak English. Is there a
relationship between watching English films and the ability to speak English? Do students
who are accustomed to watching English films have higher speaking skills than students who
do not like watching English films. Does the habit of watching English films have a positive
effect, especially for English students/learners? Students can pronounce English words or
sentences like native speakers. They can pronounce words fluently and are confident when
speaking English. Films with English subtitles can be a medium for students in learning
speaking. Films can be a special attraction for students who are lazy to learn speaking.
According to Megawati (2017: 108) Media is one component of communication, namely as a
messenger from the communicant to the communicator. During the current Covid-19
pandemic, students are learning through various media. In the film there are actors and
actresses in which they present dialogue and a storyline that has a plot, starting from
introductions, problems that arise, problem solving and resolution. Students learn to speak
from words, sentences shown in a film. Various utterances and dialects that appear can make
students have a new vocabulary. Watching movies is not only entertainment but more than
that it can make learning English.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Based on the limitation of the problem above, the questions are as follows:
a. How is the habit of watching student films?
b. How is the student's speaking ability?
c. Is there a relationship between the habit of watching English films using English Subtitles
and the ability to speak English?
LITERATURE RIVIEW
Speaking skill
According to Megawati (2019: 118) Speaking is the performance skills in English. When
students learn English, they have to practice and also produce words, sentences by speech. Speaking
is a skill that can be seen, when students learn English, they can practice it and produce words,
sentences with speech. Speaking is a visible ability, which means the ability that can be seen by others
when speaking. According to Megawati (2018:17) By speaking students can communicate and
interaction with other people. The students can utter their feelings, ideas, and giving opinion. Students
who have the ability to speak will be able to communicate and interact with others, besides being able
to make speeches, which means students can express feelings, ideas and give opinions or opinions on
things they understand. Good speaking skills can be obtained if students have good vocabulary skills.
In addition, an understanding of the use of grammar is also required in English. So that the listener or
the person being spoken to can understand when the incident occurred, whether it just finished or is
it still going on. Scott Thombury (2005:1) says Speaking is so much a part of daily life that we take it
for granted. The average person procedures tens of thousands of words a day, although some people-
like auctioneers and politicians-may produce even more than so natural integral is speaking that we
forget how we once fought to achieve this skill until, that is, we have to learn how to do it all over
again in a foreign languages. Talking is part of daily activities. Everyone can process thousands of words
per day to be able to speak either the language used daily or a foreign language that needs to be
learned. According to Kitakagi (2013), someone who remembers English sentences has an effect on
his speaking ability, which means that memorizing has a role in producing spoken language. When
speaking English, several criteria are needed so that it is easy for others to understand. These criteria
or elements make the speaker have good speaking skills. According to Brown (2004:172) elements or
elements of speaking are divided into several aspects as follows:
1. Grammar which means students' ability to understand native speakers or native speakers who use
English in speaking
2. Vocabulary which means understanding vocabulary or terms in speaking
3. Comprehension which means understanding a short question, statement, delivering an utterance,
repetition and understanding by paraphrase
4. Fluency which means the ability to speak like a native speaker
5. Pronunciation which means the spoken accent or dialect. If the five elements in speaking ability are
fulfilled, the student already has good speaking skills. According to Hanafiah (2019: 151), the process
of learning foreign languages, especially English, requires students to have knowledge of vocabulary,
understanding of grammar, semantics and pragmatics. Some of these things are supporting elements
in speaking skills in order to obtain good speaking skills.
Teaching English through English films
Karakas and Saricoban (2012) show that watching films with English subtitles makes
it easier to get meaning from foreign language films. Visual media equipped with English
subtitles can facilitate students' level of understanding in their English listening. Animated
films with subtitles in English can be a medium that they do not realize that they are
learning English. This means that their focus is not only on reading the subtitles, but also
on hearing how the original speakers (actors and actresses) in the film pronounce the text
in the subtitles. Subtitles with English as the target language in the film encourage them in
other skills, such as vocabulary, listening and reading.
In addition, Yuksel and Travendi (2009) investigated the effect of video titles on incidental
vocabulary reading knowledge and confirmed that videos greatly affect students' vocabulary
improvement. Video images benefit students as found in the Ting Hung (2009) study, in which
participants benefit from the visual portion of the video, which supports them to self-analyze
their own performance; thus, students become independent learners and critical thinkers not
only for themselves but for others' learning process; focus on analyzing images, understanding
videos and identifying their "weaknesses and strengths". In addition, according to Beare
(2008), videos support students to become more aware of their learning process. They allow
learners to get immediate feedback into videos more effectively than "simple teacher
corrections". In addition, Esseberger (2000) claims that videos can be used in diverse ways in
language classes because they are a wonderful medium of learning. However, videos can be
used not only in classrooms, but also in distance learning settings where facilitators can interact
with students via the internet
RESEARCH METHOD
The method in this research is a survey. The survey was conducted to determine the extent of
the relationship between the habit of watching English films with speaking skills. According to Frankel
and Wallen (2008:328) Correlation research is a study to determine the relationship and the level of
the relationship between two or ore variables without any attempt to influence the variable.
Correlation research is a study to determine whether there is a relationship and how big the
relationship is between two or more variables without any influence between variables. This research
is quantitative using 1 class of fifth semester students of English Education Study Program, namely
class B which is taken as a random sample of 25 people. According to Frankle and Norman (2003: 97)
explains that sampling refers to the process of selecting individuals.
The researcher uses fifth semester students because it is expected that they have good English
speaking skills, besides that they have received Speaking courses since the first semester. This study
uses two variables, the dependent variable and the independent variable. The independent variable
is the students' habit of watching English films using English subtitles and the dependent variable is
the ability to speak. The instrument used is a questionnaire. Questionnaire in the form of a
questionnaire. The questionnaire uses a Likert scale. The questionnaire is in the form of the habit of
watching English films using English subtitles. The questionnaires were given as many as 20 questions,
each question having answers A, B, C and D, E where the answer A which means strongly agree, B
means agree, C means neutral, D means disagree and E means strongly disagree. Researchers gave
questionnaires to students and their speaking skills were known by asking for the value of speaking
courses in the third semester. Then the researcher checked the results of the questionnaire and the
score of speaking ability. The questionnaire given was adjusted to the habit of watching English films
using English subtitles.
After getting the results, the researcher analyzed the data obtained with the SPSS program to
find out whether there was a relationship between the habit of watching English films and speaking
skills. The correlation coefficient shows the relationship between the two variables whether it has a
positive or negative relationship. The strong relationship between the two variables can be described
by (+) or (-). If the two variables do not have a relationship then the correlation coefficient is (0). The
method used in this study is a correlation research method, the method was chosen to determine the
extent of the relationship between two or more variables based on the correlation coefficient. The
correlation coefficient is an index that provides information about the strength and direction of the
relationship between two or more variables with a correlation coefficient of -1.00 to 0 to +1.00. The
greater the correlation value, the stronger the relationship.
RESULT & DISCUSSION
RESULT
Students are given a questionnaire containing a column to enter the value of the speaking
course in the third semester as well as several statements related to the habit of watching English
films using English subtitles. The following is a table of grades B students' extensive speaking courses
in semester 3.

Based on the table above, it is known that the highest frequency value of the course is
7 and the lowest frequency is 4. That is, out of a total of 25 respondents, 7 people got a course
value of 4.00, 7 other people got a score of 3.75, 7 others got a score of 3.25 and The remaining
4 get a score of 3.00.

Then in the viewing habits table, we can find out that the highest frequency of students
watching English films is once a week, which is 15 and the lowest is never, namely 1. From a
total of 25 respondents, 3 people have the habit of watching movies every day, 15 people watch
a movie once a week, 6 people watch it more than once a week and the rest that is 1 person
never watch an English movie at all.

The table above shows the frequency of using subtitles when watching movies. Where
the highest frequency is 12 and the lowest is 1. From a total of 25 respondents, 12 people use
subtitles when watching movies, 12 others sometimes use subtitles when watching movies and
1 other doesn't use subtitles when watching movies. From the three tables above, it is known
that there is a relationship between student interest in speaking skills and the value of Sig. (2-
tailed) >0.05 ; which means the initial hypothesis is accepted. The point is that the data is
normally distributed.

Based on the table above, it can be seen that the correlation coefficient for students' habits
of watching English films using English subtitles is 449, this means that the Pearson Product Moment
correlation coefficient is (+) positive correlation between the habit of watching English films using
English subtitles and the ability to speak English. . Then the table shows that the significant score is
024 in other words (Ha) is accepted and (H0) is rejected.
If Sig (2-tailed) is > 0.05, which means there is no relationship or correlation
If Sig (2-tailed) is < 0.05, which means the correlation is significant
There are two hypotheses in this study. The first is H0 which means there is no correlation
between the habit of watching English films using English subtitles with the ability to speak English.
Second, Ha means that there is a positive correlation between the habit of watching English films using
English subtitles and the ability to speak English. If Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.014 < 0.05, which means that
there is a relationship between the habit of watching English films using English subtitles and the
ability to speak English. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship
between the habit of watching English films with English subtitles and speaking ability. The result of
the research is that there is a positive relationship between student habits and speaking ability with a
correlation coefficient of 0.014 < 0.05. The positive sign (+) indicates that the higher the student's
habit of watching English films with English subtitles, the greater the value of their English speaking
ability.
CONCLUSION
English films with English subtitles have a special attraction for students in learning English,
especially speaking. When students watch English films but don't know what the actors/actresses are
talking about in the film's storyline, they will find out the meaning or meaning through the English
texts that are displayed. Students will interpret difficult words and phrases into Indonesian. Students'
difficulties in understanding vocabulary will hinder them in having the ability to speak English.
Students who are accustomed to watching English films tend to have good communication skills in
English. They will know and understand a lot of vocabulary and can pronounce words according to
native speakers. In this study, it was found that there was a positive correlation coefficient correlation
between students' habits of watching English films using English subtitles and students' English
speaking skills. Students who have the habit of watching English films using English subtitles will have
high speaking skills as well. Students who understand the meaning and writing of English
pronunciation, they will grow confident when speaking in English.
