Personal Pitch - Alicia Taylor

Alicia Taylor is a performing artist, living and working in New York and Toronto.

Growing up, she was inspired by her family—who love music, theatre, and dance—leading her

to pursue a career in the performing arts. Her abuelo had a lengthy record collection of jazz

albums and jazz-age musicals, which he would play every time she would visit. This was her

first exposure to musicals. As Alicia got older, her mom introduced her to golden age musicals

such as My Fair Lady. Her introduction to the dance world was led by her mom showing her

musicals with Bob Fosse choreography like Damn Yankees and Chicago.

Alicia has taken part in numerous projects over multiple disciplines: The Nutcracker (Cat

Cavalry and Rat) with The National Ballet of Canada, Nine In Concert (ensemble) with Podium

Concert Productions, and as a choir singer for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s annual winter

concert (four years). She was also a part of the creative team for Know My Name—a show

created to educate and examine themes around rape culture, sexual assault, and harassment—in

which she was a consultant to writers, directors, and choreographers. It is her goal to found a

program that provides accessible training in the performing arts. She believes in building a more

fiscally accessible and inclusive artistic landscape. This program, operating on a

hybrid—in-person and virtual—platform, would provide training and resources to people of all

ages, in every artistic discipline. Education is a right, and that includes arts education.

In her work, Alicia aims to strike a balance between tradition and modernity—embracing

conventional and unconventional stylings across all disciplines. Tradition is important because it

keeps us rooted in who we are, but modernity is equally important in that it allows us to

contribute to the evolution of art. A key figure in inspiring this perspective is Jacob Collier.

While he is a classically trained musician, his music integrates components of jazz, R&B,

classical, and pop music, using shared elements in music theory to glue all of the varied genres

together. With her similar, but unique take, Alicia uses the beauty she sees in all forms of art

across the various artistic eras and movements, and implements elements of each in her work.

Alicia aims to combine this philosophy with an authentic approach to her work. She is motivated

to work on projects that promote authenticity. She uses art as a means to emotionally purge,

helping her find internal resolution and sees it as her artistic responsibility to remain truthful with

the audience; finding internal resolution leads to resolution for the audience as well.
