Time Allowed: 3 hours

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Write your Index Number on the front page and inside the back flap of the Answer Booklet.

2. Write all your answers in the Answer Booklet provided.

3. If you use extra sheets of paper, be sure to show clearly the question number(s) being answered
and to tie each sheet in your Answer Booklet at the appropriate places. Ensure that your Index
Number is written on the extra sheets.

4. Answer all the questions with a blue or black ballpoint pen or ink pen. Do not use red ink. You
may use a pencil only for drawing.

5. You may use a calculator, provided it is silent, battery-operated and non-programmable.

6. There are three sections in this paper. Sections A and B are compulsory. Note the options
in Section C.

There are three questions in this section. Answer only one question.
Each question is worth 20 marks.

QUESTION 1

Design Problem:

In some rural families, electricity is a major problem as they do


not have a reliable power source.

Design Brief:

Design a renewable source of energy as a power source.

Specifications:

The renewable energy power source should be:

 easily operated and safe for the user;


 able to generate power for two light bulbs and a TV set;
 constructed with affordable materials;
 elegant and stylish, incorporating current market trends;
 made from a sound construction using available materials.

Requirements:

(a) Produce pictorial freehand sketches of two possible solutions and label the parts. (5 marks)

(b) Draw a pictorial rendered freehand sketch of the final solution. (4 marks)

(c) Produce a detailed drawing to show the joint between any two members. (3 marks)

(d) Explain how the renewable power source works. (2 marks)

(e) Evaluate your final solution using the following criteria:

(i) Safety

(ii) Materials used

(iii) Functionality (6 marks)

Design Problem:

Scaling fish for export purposes becomes challenging when it involves mass scaling.

Design Brief:

Design a Fish Scaling mechanism which would ease the task of scaling fish.

Specifications:

The Fish Scraper should:

 be manually or mechanically operated;


 be a simple design that is built at a reasonable cost;
 have enough space for the fish and safe to use;
 be made of materials that are readily and locally available.

Requirements:

(a) Produce pictorial freehand sketches of two possible solutions and label the parts. (5 marks)

(b) Draw a pictorial rendered free hand sketch of the final solution. (4 marks)

(c) Make a detailed drawing to show the joint between any two members. (3 marks)

(d) Explain how the Fish scraper will work. (2 marks)

(e) Evaluate the two possible solutions using the following criteria.

(ii) Materials Used

(iii) Functionality

QUESTION 3

Design Problem:

Office workers have the tendency to not taking enough physical exercises due to
their busy working conditions which may result in many of them suffering from
neck and back pains.

Design Brief:

Design an exercise machine that can be used by these workers for neck and back exercise
at home or at the office.

Specifications:

The mechanism should be:

 strong and durable;


 structurally safe and secure;
 accessible and safe to use;
 easy to accommodate and do not take up a lot of space;
 constructed from readily available materials.

Requirements:

(a) Produce pictorial freehand sketches of two possible solutions. (5 marks)

(b) Draw a pictorial rendered free hand sketch of the final solution. (4 marks)

(c) Make a detailed drawing to show how members are assembled. (3 marks)

(d) Explain how the mechanism works for the user. (2 marks)

(e) Evaluate the two possible solutions using the following criteria.

(i) Safety

(ii) Material used

(iii) Functionality (6 marks)
