Human Population

The human population continues to grow rapidly, unlike any other species in history. As the population increases, humanity has a greater impact on the environment. Demographers study factors like population size, birth and death rates, and migration patterns. Issues like lack of opportunities, poverty, and environmental disasters drive migration between countries seeking better standards of living and economic opportunities. However, population growth and fossil fuel usage contribute to climate change, posing a severe future threat. A major social factor determining family size is the role of women in society - their education levels, marriage age, and control over family planning affect fertility rates.

The human population continues to grow rapidly.

The fact is, humanity today represents

something unprecedented in the history of the world: never before has one species had such a great
impact on the environment in such a short time and continued to increase at such a rapid rate. These
qualities make the human population the underlying environmental issue.

POPULATION

• the entire aggregation of items from which samples can be drawn

• the people who inhabit a territory or state

• number of people in a geographic area. It can also be used for subgroups of people or animals.

Before you start going out and saying “The end is certain!”, realize that people are able to come up with
ideas to extend their ability to inhabit this Earth, at least temporarily. More than 200 years ago, Thomas
Malthus, an English economist and demographer (population expert), eloquently stated the human
population problem.

Demographers

 study population size;

 density and distribution;

 age structure;

 sex ratio;

 Birth rate;

 Death rate;

Migration

 – permanent change of residence of a person or group

Push Factors

Circumstances in the country or origin that lead people to emigrate.

 No job opportunities;
 Poverty;
 War; and
 Environmental disasters

Pull factors

Conditions in the destination country that make emigration attractive.

1. Economic opportunity;
2. Political freedom; and
(i.e. Democracy)
3. Better standards of living

FACTORS AFFECTING BIRTH , TOTAL AND FERTILITY RATE

1. Children in labor force
2. Cost of raising and educating children
3. Urbanization
4. Education level and employment for women
5. rate
6. Populations religious beliefs, customs and traditions
7. Average marrying age
8. Availability of birth control and abortions

For most people in the world. The good life we are striving for means more machines and much more
use of energy so does a problem because all these adds to one of the great threats for the future. Severe
climate change. 80% of the world still uses fossil fuels and the science shows that our climate may
change dramatically in the future because of the carbon dioxide emission from continuing burning of
fossil fuels.

Major Social Factor

Determining Family Size is the
ROLE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY

• Early marriages foster high fertility rates.

• Lack of education opportunities for women reduces their options.
• When level of education increases, fertility rates fall.
• The most important factor is the ability of women to control the size of their family.
• Access to birth control is key
