of nursing (Mark Allen Publishing

1) Introduction (2 mins) Today, you will recall the different spiritual practices worldwide that can be
influenced by one’s belief, religion, and tradition.

B. MAIN LESSON

Skill-building Activity

Let us relate spirituality and nursing practice.

Find a partner and work on the following:
1. How is spirituality related to nursing?
Physical healing, pain relief, and personal development might result from
attending to the patient's spiritual needs. Less stress and burnout are
experienced by nurses who provide spiritual care. An essential first step in
recognizing a patient's particular needs is to incorporate spiritual care into
nursing practice. The patient/provider relationship can be strengthened if
nurses respect a patient's spiritual or religious beliefs.

2. React on the following statements:

a. . “Definitions of spirituality represent a variety of worldviews and the opinions of people from divergent
walks of life.” – Carson, 1993.

Common to most spirituality descriptions is that the elements of love,

compassion, caring, transcendence, relationship with God, and the connection
of body, mind, and spirit are reflected in the literature on nursing.

b. “Nursing as a profession, will embrace more than an art and a science; it will be a blending of
three factors: of art and science, and the spirit of unselfish devotion to a cause primarily
concerned with helping those who are physically, mentally or
spiritually ill.” – Price, 1954
Along with science, nursing develops into an art form that places a premium on
critical thinking and communication abilities. The nature of a nurse's work is very
relational, and it calls for the interpretation of science with the patient's best
interests in mind. Nursing is an intuitive, imaginative, and knowledgeable
profession. It involves having the ability to observe a space and determine what is
happening without consulting a clinical diagnostic. Nurses must develop abilities
in active listening, insight, and compassionate care without passing judgment.

3. An emergency department nurse is caring for a patient who was severely injured in a car
accident. The patient's family is in the waiting room. They are crying softly. The nurse sits down
next to the family, takes the mother's hand, and says, "I can only imagine how you're feeling.
What can I do to help you feel more at peace right now? " The patient’s family requested for a
prayer, as a nurse what should you do?

It is important to ask them what they would like you to pray for. Ask them what they
think healing looks like if they ask you to pray for them. Once they have expressed
themselves with words from their own hearts, you can pray for them aloud while
respecting their needs.

ANSWER: (French & Narayanasamy 2011) stated that the practice of prayer in health care raises a slew
of ethical issues. While some argue that the absence of informed consent is important for perfect
blinding and a non-prayer-receptive population, others argue that it is unethical and that such studies
should be discontinued. In practice, a nurse must acquire agreement prior to praying, but must follow
local policies and protocols regarding prayer. A nurse should possess the following characteristics:
honesty, compassion, authenticity, and the capacity for respectful, candid self-disclosure. A nurse
should not misuse the authority bestowed upon them, promote their own religious objectives, or
engage in insensitive self-disclosure. They must strike a difficult balance between their professional
responsibilities as nurses and their more personal, religious responsibilities as individuals. It appears
premature to advocate prescribing prayer, as many would argue that we cannot justify the prescription
of prayer or distant healing without clear evidence from rigorous trials (Targ, 2002).
