EEEB113 Circuits Analysis 1 Group Assignment, Semester 1 2011/2012

The document provides instructions for a group assignment on circuit analysis. Students must form groups of 5 or less and submit a report of no more than 10 pages by August 8, 2011. The report will be assessed based on variety of information used, initiative shown, reasoning/arguments provided, and new ideas proposed. It includes two questions - the first asks students to design and simulate a time delay circuit using operational amplifiers, and the second asks students to analyze how electric vehicles can reduce emissions and barriers to their adoption, and make recommendations to stakeholders.

EEEB113 Circuits Analysis 1 Group Assignment, Semester 1 2011/2012 Question 1 [20 Marks] There are several methods for constructing a time delay circuit. One method is to use an operational amplifier (op-amp) configured as an integrator and another op-amp configured as a comparator. A block diagram showing this application is shown below. The input voltage is normally a constant value. Upon initiation, the integrator circuit will integrate this input voltage value. When a threshold value (set by the comparator) is reached, an output will be produced. The output, which is delayed from the initiation of the input voltage, can be used to trigger a device or a process.

Your assignments are as follows: i. Conduct literature review to obtain a simple op-amp integrator circuit and a comparator circuit. ii. Obtain a mathematical expression relating the output voltage to the input voltage. Assumed a constant input voltage value and a threshold voltage value and obtain an expression for time delay. iii. Using any SPICE computational software, simulate the circuit to verify the calculated time delay value. Make TWO simulation runs with different circuit parameters and hence different time delays. iv. Suggest some use for the circuit and explain your concept.

Question 2 [20 Marks] The Malaysian government had made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in the year 2020, in comparison to the 2005 figures. Amongst the solutions identified is the use of electric vehicle. Write a report to clarify the following points: How does the use of electric vehicle reduce greenhouse emissions? What are the barriers towards widespread use of electric vehicles? Make recommendations to stakeholders (government, regulatory bodies, industry players, public etc) on how the use of electric vehicle can be a win-win situation for all.
