~Nativity Script~

Scene 1: Bethlehem

Narrator 1

Photos needed: sharing bread, singing together, people sleeping,

donkey, cow, sheep

Script

Narrator 1: This night is like no other night. It is a time to dream and

sing our way to Bethlehem.

The little town we seek sits in the hill country some ten miles south
of Jerusalem. For thousands of years, the houses have gathered
there on the hilltop like a family breaking bread. “Bethlehem” means
“house of bread.”

In the center of the village is a small inn. On this night it is

overflowing with people seeking sleep and a place to eat. Behind the
inn is a dark stable. A gray donkey chews his barley and broken straw
while a weary cow leans and rests after the day’s plowing in the
valley. A sheep nearby is nearly asleep.

All is still and quiet in the little town.

Scene 2: Mary and Joseph Traveling

Parts: N
arrator 2, Mary, Joseph, Donkey, Innkeeper
Script

Narrator 2:  As night gathers, the last two travelers come slowly
up the road. Look, there is a young woman about to be a mother.
She is walking with her husband. They are Joseph and Mary from
Nazareth! They have walked for six days to come to this city where
King David was born, so long ago.

Mary, Joseph and the donkey: (they are walking and are so tired
from their long journey. Act like you have been walking for six days!)

Narrator 2: They have come, like so many others, because the
Roman emperor wants to count each one, so he can take their
money as a tax.

But it is late, and Mary is so tired. Where will they sleep?

Mary, Joseph and the donkey: walk to the innkeeper and ask if there
is any room in the inn (without any words, just acting)

Innkeeper: Tell Mary and Joseph that there is no room (no words,
just acting). Point off into the d
 istance to the manager.

Narrator 2:  There is no room in the inn.

Mary and Joseph decide to sleep with the animals.

Scene 3: Mary and Joseph in the stable holding baby

Jesus.

Parts: Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus

Photos needed: Barn animals, donkey, cat, dog, cow, stars

Script

Mary and Joseph hold baby Jesus. A special baby is here, hold him
and rock him.

Scene 4: Shepherds with sheep were visited by

angels

Parts: Narrator 4, Shepherds, Angels, Sheep

Photos needed: Sheep, Angels, and Shepherds, Holy family (Mary,

Joseph and Baby Jesus)

Script:

Narrator 4:  In the hills outside Bethlehem, shepherds watch

their sleepy sheep. All at once, the dark is lost in light, and in the
middle of the light is something even brighter: the faces of many
angels.

Shepherds who are sleepy with their sheep

Angels come and show their wings and beautiful costumes

Shepherds look up at the angels, pointing to them and acting afraid

Narrator 4: The shepherds are afraid, but then they hear music in
the sky, and a voice clearly says, “Do not be afraid. Listen, I bring you
news of great joy, a joy to be shared by all people. Today in the City
of David called Bethlehem a Savior is born! He is Christ, the Lord.”

Then more angels appear, a whole heavenly multitude, praising

God and singing!

Angels    “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,

good will to all people, everywhere.”

Narrator 4:  The shepherds run with joy across the fields to
Bethlehem to the barn behind the inn. There they find the Holy
Family and creep forward, overwhelmed with wonder, to find baby
Jesus in the center of all that love.

Shepherds and Sheep: run with joy to Bethlehem and find the baby
Jesus. Creep forward and look surprised and full of joy looking at a
beautiful scene of the Holy Family

Scene 5: Three kings bring up the presents; Star of

Bethlehem

Parts: Narrator 5, three Kings with gifts, Camel, Star

Photos needed: Gifts, star

Script:

Narrator 5:  From far away, three camels plod up the road to
Bethlehem. They have come from the East, far beyond the Arabian
Desert, maybe from as far as the Caspian Sea. The camels carry three
kings, the wise ones, the magi. They are following a great wild star, a
star that made them feel as if it was leading them to something
special. They are following the star wherever it goes to find the
special event that the appearance of this wild star foretold.

Three Kings and camel: Walk from a long distance away, travel
around in your costume. Point to the star as you move forward

Star:   Lead the way and show the three Kings where baby
Jesus is.

Narrator 5:  The kings’ journey ends in finding a new kind of
King. Their restlessness now rests at last. They fall to their knees and
give him bright gold, sweet-smelling frankincense and a bitter herb
called myrrh; gifts they brought from far away with much love.

Find the baby Jesus and kneel, Give your gifts

Narrator 5:  So now, let us all come as if we are following that

same wild star, to find Emanuel, God with us. We come, as people
have come all through the ages, to bring our own gifts to this Child,
God’s gift to us. Come let us offer our humble gifts—let us offer our
stars.
