Basa Pilipinas is USAID/Philippines’ flagship basic education project in support of the
Philippine Government’s early grade reading program. Implemented in close
collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), Basa Pilipinas aims to improve
the reading skills for at least one million early grade students in Filipino, English, and
selected Mother Tongues. This will be achieved by improving reading instruction, reading
delivery systems, and access to quality reading materials.

Chapter 1
Jean reads the clue again, “A deep
place full of trees.”
“Maybe it’s a garden?” Lee says quietly.
“There are not a lot of trees in gardens,
Lee,” Jean says thoughtfully.
“Oh wait, I know!” Jean squeals. “I think
it’s a forest.”
“Great idea,” Steve says.
They all quickly leave for the forest. Jean
and Lee hope they will find their next
clue there.

In the forest, they are greeted by many
big, green trees. It is quite lush. It is
a lovely scene.
“Hmm, the place where two trees lean,”
Jean reads carefully.
They all walk ahead and peek up into
the tall trees. They walk here and there
through the paths. Jean and Lee want
to find the next clue.

“Over here!” Lee calls loudly. He has
found something. Maybe it’s the next
clue?
They all speedily run over to see Lee.
“I found two trees that lean,” Lee says
proudly.
“Those are not trees,” Jean says. “They
are just weeds.”
“Oh,” says Lee, sadly. “But at least they
lean.”
They quickly walk on to find the next
clue.

Then, they come into a clearing in the
forest. Two tall leaning trees are in the
middle.
“Two trees that lean!” Jean screams.
“We have to step under them and find
out the next clue,” Lee says hurriedly.
They all carefully kneel down under the
leaning trees. They see a small bag of
beans and another clue. Lee quickly
reaches for the clue to read it.

Lee reads slowly, “Seek the next clue by
following the stream to the east. In front
of a steep hill of water and mist, you will
find the next clue.”
“Follow the stream to the east,” Jean says.
“How do we know which way is east?”
Lee asks thoughtfully.
“And what is a steep hill of water and
mist?” asks Jean.
They team together to see where they
need to go next. They have a lot to think
about.

Chapter 2
“When we face the sun, it is east,” Jean
says.
“A steep hill of water and mist … ,” they
think aloud.
“I’ve got it!” Lee screams suddenly.
“Steve, you want us to go to that tall and
loud waterfall east of here.”
“Yes, a waterfall is a steep hill of water
and mist,” Steve says happily.
They all take off to find the stream.
Lee and Jean are so happy to have
figured it out.

They arrive at the fast flowing stream.
“We need to follow it going east,” Lee
says.
“But we can’t do it from here. We
need to get our feet wet and cross this
stream,” Jean says.
Lee is fearful. He is scared to cross the
rushing stream. Steve kindly takes his
brother by the hand. They roll up their
pants to their knees and cross the rushing
stream carefully.

At the waterfall, they look around
everywhere. They look left, they look
right. They look up, they look down.
Jean quickly reads the clue again,
“In front of a steep hill of water and mist,
you will find the next clue.” “This mist
looks like steam,” she says.
She stands in front of the tall waterfall
and looks down at a rock. “I found the
clue!” she screams joyfully. “It says look
for the bag of mangoes.”

They all run over fast.
“A little bag of mangoes?” Jean asks.
“We now have beans and mangoes.”
“And, we have a new clue,” Lee says
excitedly. He reaches for it.
Lee reads the clue this time, “Up high
in the sky where it is bright, you can see
everyone in town but you are out of
sight.”
“Up high in the sky?” Jean asks wrinkling
her nose.
“You can see everyone in town but you
are out of sight?” Lee asks.
“Where could that be?” Lee and Jean
think hard.

Chapter 3
Jean reads the clue again, “Where the
bread is white and they bake a pie,
you will find your next clue in a pile of
lemons.”
Jean thinks of where the bread is white.
Bread is almost always white.
Lee thinks of where pies are baked.
Pies are mostly baked in kitchens or in
bakeries.
And Steve thinks of eating a pie. There
are so many kinds of pies.

“I know where it is,” Jean says. “It’s at
Uncle Mike’s bakery!”
They pile into the elevator and ride
down. They walk left and then right to
the bakery. They are almost there.
Lee gently pushes the door to the
bakery. The chimes on the door ring like
a bell.
“Hello, children. Hello, Steve,” says Uncle
Mike. “I was waiting for you. Are you
looking for another new clue?”
“Yes, Uncle Mike!” Lee shouts excitedly.
“Please, where are your lemons?”

Uncle Mike guides them to the back.
It is quite small in the back of the shop.
He kindly gives them each a slice of
lemon pie. They all eat quickly.
“Here is the pile of lemons,” says
Uncle Mike. “And, here is a bag of flour.”
“We now have beans, mangoes, rice,
and flour,” Jean says.
“And, you have a new clue,” Steve says
with a smile.

Lee reads the last clue. “It’s in a wide
room where a fire burns and meals are
made. This is a place where you have
played.”
“A wide room where a fire burns?”
Jean asks.
“In a wide room where a fire burns and
meals are made?” Lee asks.
“In the place where you have played,”
Steve says. “Where could that be?”
They all finish their pie. Lee and Jean
think deeply.

Chapter 4
It is almost night. They all think and think
about the last clue. They need to think
quickly! The day is almost over.
“I know,” Lee says loudly. “It’s the kitchen
in our house, Jean.”
“That’s right, Lee,” Steve says. “It’s
Mama’s kitchen!”
They walk back home in a good mood.

When they arrive, Steve says, “You made
it! You are so smart and bright.”
“We made it. You gave us hard clues.
We have beans, mangoes, rice, and
flour,” Jean says.
“And now, you have spices,” Steve says.
“What are we going to do with beans,
mangoes, rice, flour, and spices?”
Lee asks.
“Ah! That is your final task,” Steve says
with a smile.

Jean looks around the kitchen.
“Hmm, we have all we need to make a
meal,” Jean says.
“What a great team you are!” Steve says
proudly. “You figured it out.”
Lee takes the beans, rice, and spices.
Jean takes the mangoes and flour.
What will they make?

Lee skillfully makes a big pot of rice and
beans. He carefully adds a pinch of his
spices.
Jean makes a big mango pie. It smells
good.
Steve invites Uncle Mike to join the meal.
They neatly set the table. The meal is
ready to eat.

As they eat, they talk about their trip to
the green forest. They talk about their trip
to the tall waterfall. They talk about their
trip to the top floor of the tall building up
high in the sky. They talk about their trip
to Uncle Mikes’s bakery. They talk about
their trip back home when it was almost
night.
Steve says, “I am so proud of you. What
did you learn?”
Jean speaks up, “I learned that when we
all work together, we can find answers to
puzzles and problems.”
“And we get hungry doing it,” Lee adds
smiling.
They all clap and agree.
