Fun Fitness: Dance Your Way Fit

Dance is an effective form of exercise that provides both physical and mental benefits. It is an aerobic activity that raises heart rate and improves cardiovascular health when performed at sufficient intensity and duration. The intensity of a dance workout depends on the style, with faster styles like salsa or hip hop equivalent to jogging and slower styles like ballroom similar to walking. Dance engages the entire body, especially the legs, and is a fun alternative to traditional workouts that can motivate people to exercise more regularly.

Dance Workout

I. INTRODUCTION

We all know that exercise is important for many reasons–it reduces weight, improves
muscle strength and definition, strengthens joints, lowers blood pressure, and helps with
many other physical and health issues. And, everyone should exercise, right? But, does
getting on a treadmill or going to a gym fill you with the same dread as getting a root
canal?

"You need to exercise." Everyone dreads hearing their doctor say these words, and for
the first time they were uttered, people have been looking for a way to make exercise
fun. One solution is dancing.

II. DEFINITION

Dance fitness is a type of group exercise class that incorporates some or many
forms of dance.

III. WHAT MAKES DANCE A WORKOUT?

The truth is, it doesn’t matter if you stomp it out at a studio hip-hop class or jam to your
favorite tunes in your living room: If your heart rate hastens, whatever type of dance
you’re doing and wherever you’re doing it, you’re working out.

It’s Aerobic. It's an aerobic workout, meaning it enhances or conditions our

cardiovascular, because just like a typical workout, it increases our breathing and
heart rate.

IV. INTENSITY AND DURATION

Many dance workouts are designed to build muscular strength, mobility, and flexibility
depending on the intensity and duration, meaning there must be a structured plan. Dancing
uses most of your muscles, but primarily the hamstrings, quads, glutes, and calves.

How intense a workout you get from dancing depends on the style of dance you’re doing and
how long you do it. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that slower dance styles, like
many types of ballroom dancing, are often the same intensity as walking or other moderate-
intensity workouts; faster-paced dance types, like salsa or cardio dance, can often be the
equivalent of a more vigorous workout, like jogging or swimming.

Remember: You may not reap the same benefits if you’re just dancing for fun.
(ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/OPTIONAL)

For weight loss: Zumba

For intense and sustained activity, Zumba classes are fantastic. The pace is such that you can
easily burn around 250 calories in half an hour, and the sessions are social and easy to pick up
by newbies.

For strength: Pole dancing

Pole dancing is basically a sequence of gymnastic body-weight exercises that work all the
muscle groups: putting the routines together gives you a full-body muscle workout that
strengthens your body — and you can even do it from home, or on your own.

For team players: Swing

Pair up with a buddy and get to swing classes: you’ll find that working in a pair helps with
motivation, just like having a gym buddy. Because of the social and physical contact of swing
dancing, your body will release stress-busting hormones

V. CONCLUSION

Dancing is an exercise that engages the entire body as well as the mind. Learning and
remembering choreography keeps your brain active while constant movement addresses your
heart, circulation, balance, muscles and joints. Dancing kills calories, and it is fun to boot! It’s
great exercise for both men and women. So, if you need to add a shot of energy into your
workouts, and you’re looking for a fresh, different and fun way to exercise to make yourself
motivated, you need to start dancing!
