Epidemiology, Aetiology and Prevention of Periodontal Disease (Recovered)

The document discusses periodontal disease, which refers to inflammatory diseases that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It identifies three main types of periodontal disease and explains their causes and risk factors. Prevention strategies are outlined at the individual, community, and dental professional levels through practices like oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

“All the diseases of the periodontium, that refer to the any

pathological state that involves the supporting tissues of teeth
(gingiva, periodontal ligaments, cementum, and alveolar bone)”

The epidemiology of periodontal

disease is one of the most
important challenges
1. Inflammatory disease, usually called
“periodontitis” or “marginal periodontitis”.
Destruction of alveolar bone happened by the
formation of subgingival pockets at the site of
chronic inflammation.
2. “Periodontosis”or “juvenile periodontitis”/
“diffuse alveolar atrophy”, apparently systemic
in origin. Characterized by generalized bone
loss
3. ”Atrophy”, associated with a disease or old age
 Gingivitis: is a disease characterized by
inflammation restricted to the gingival soft tissue
with no loss of alveolar bone
 Periodontal disease: an inflammatory disease of the
supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific
microorganism, resulting in progressive destruction
of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with
pocket formation, recession, or both
 Local factors  deposits on teeth, abnormal
habits,food impaction

 Systemic factors  faulty nutrition, endocrine

dysfunction, radiation, psychogenic factors,
iatrogenic factors
 Age
 Sex
 Race
 Education
 Income
 Residential place
 Diet
 Nutrition
 Socio-economic factors
 Adequate plaque removal has been shown to
prevent gingivitis as well as substantially limit the
progression of periodontitis
 Regular and thorough removal of plaque by dentist
and dental hygienist can successfully control
periodontal disease
 Oral hygiene practices involve the thorough daily
removal of dental plaque and other debris by tooth
brushing and flossing
