Discussion 14 - Conveying System

This document discusses different types of conveying systems. Conveying systems transport materials from one place to another using mechanisms like rollers, wheels, or belts. There are several types of conveying systems including pneumatic systems which use air pressure to move products through tubes, vibrating conveyor systems which use vibration to move bulk solids or hot materials along an inclined trough, and flexible conveyor systems which can navigate around obstacles. Vertical conveyors raise or lower materials between facility levels while heavy duty roller conveyors can move very heavy items. Elevators and escalators are also conveying systems used to transport people vertically in buildings. The type of conveying system depends on the product, throughput needs, and any elevation changes

WHAT IS A CONVEYING
SYSTEM?
Introduction

- A conveying system of any kind is used to transport a

material from one particular place to another.

- Conveyor Systems are mechanical devices or assemblies

that transport material with minimal effort. While there are
many kinds of conveyor systems, they usually consist of a
frame that supports either rollers, wheels, or a belt, upon
which materials move from one place to another.

- They may be powered by a motor, by gravity, or manually.

These material handling systems come in many different
varieties to suit the different products or materials that
need to be transported.

2
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONVEYING
SYSTEMS

1. Pneumatic conveyor systems

- Pneumatic system uses pipes or ducts called transportation

lines that carry a mixture of materials and a stream of air.

- Products are moved through tubes by air pressure.

- Pneumatic conveyors are either carrier systems or dilute-phase

systems

2. Vibrating conveyor system

- A vibrating conveyor is a machine with a solid conveying surface which is

turned up on the side to form a trough.

- They are used extensively in food-grade applications to convey dry bulk

solids where sanitation, wash down, and low maintenance are essential.

- They can be used to convey newly-cast metal parts which may reach
upwards of 1,500 °F (820 °C).

3. Flexible conveyor systems

- The flexible conveyor is based on a conveyor beam in aluminum or

stainless steel, with low-friction slide rails guiding a plastic multi-flexing
chain.

- These conveyors can be worked around obstacles and keep production

lines flowing

4. Vertical conveyors

- Vertical conveyors, also commonly referred to as freight lifts and material lifts,
are conveyor systems used to raise or lower materials to different levels of a
facility during the handling process.

- Vertical lift conveyors contain two adjacent, parallel conveyors for

simultaneous upward movement of adjacent surfaces of the parallel conveyors.

- While similar in look to freight elevators, vertical conveyors are not equipped
to transport people, only materials.

5. Heavy duty roller conveyors

- are used for moving items that weigh at least 500 pounds (230 kg).

- Many of the heavy duty roller conveyors can move as fast as 75 feet per
minute (23 m/min)

- Other types of heavy-duty roller conveyors are gravity roller conveyors,

chain-driven live roller conveyors, pallet accumulation conveyors, multi-
strand chain conveyors, and chain and roller transfers.

6. Elevators and Escalators

- are vertical transport systems that transport people between floors of a

building. An elevator system consists of a hoisting mechanism that is
connected to a car or platform.

- Escalators are inclined, continuous moving stairs and handrails that

transport people from one floor to another. They are used where elevators
may be impractical but use of stairways may be too slow for the
anticipated crowd.

Different Applications For Building Conveying Systems

• Conveyor selection depends on product • Conveyors can be hand powered—where

type, throughput or speed, elevation products are moved along manually over
change, and in some cases, industry focus. rollers or wheels—or engine/motor
powered, or gravity powered.
• Belt conveyors, for instance, come in a
variety of sizes and can range from foot-long • In general, though, they are driven by AC
units used on packaging lines to mile-long and DC motors, either directly or through
systems used for mining operations. reduction gears, chains, and sprockets, etc.
Products generally ride on the top surfaces
• Conveyors are sometimes custom designed
of conveyors, though exceptions exist.
from modular components such as
straightaways, curves, transitions, merges,
dividers, etc.

CONVEYING SYSTEM DESIGN
- Reduction of your order to fulfillment cycle time
- Increase productivity of your employees by always having work
available
- Reduction of operational costs and labor
- Reduction of worker comp claims as a result of an
ergonomically designed environment
- Free up floor space through vertical design
