Nhi Huynh-Literature Planning

This document provides an overview of a proposed two-week lesson plan based on the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". The lessons will teach students about the structure of stories, the life cycle of butterflies, healthy foods, and the value of hope. A variety of activities are planned, including drawing a story map, watching videos, playing games to recall the days, numbers and foods in the story, and creating art about caterpillars. The teacher will use visual aids, videos, and games to engage students and make the lessons interactive. Differentiation strategies like inviting ESL students to demonstrate their knowledge and students with impairments to assist will be used to include all students.

Assignment Three: A two-week literature-based lesson sequence

Unit Title
Unit Rationale
The Very Hungry Caterpillar will be the unit lessons for children who are 3-5 years old. The reason I choose that this is my favourite book when I was a little
girl. Moreover, I am also impressed about its contents and incredible drawings as well as their behind lessons which will be helpful for them. Children can have
different lens about discovering the nature, especially the life circle of the butterfly. This will inspire them to listen and read along. Therefore, the purpose of
teaching this lesson is to teach the children the beginning, middle and end of a story as well as its natural environment. Moreover, through the lesson, some
contents, including the days, numbers, recalling the many foods the caterpillar consumes on a regular basis and the various phases a caterpillar goes through
before becoming a butterfly. The teacher may assist the students in making an artwork about the caterpillar and in creating a narrative map that illustrates the
plot. Furthermore, they can learn about hope lesson. To achieve these outcomes, the EYLS frameworks and theory of childhood as well as using multimodality
practices will be applied to make an effective plan. These things will be my specific scope and sequence to contribute this success of teaching plan.

learning and assist students in achieving the lesson's goal are
known as creative learning activities. In this unit, several
kinds of activities will be created based on " The very
hungry caterpillar" book. Moreover, the EYLF framework
also supports me to offer appropriate learning objectives.
Before I read, I will let them say about the days and
numbers or they can predict it. If they do not know, I will
present it carefully. After that, I will read aloud the content
The Very Hungry Caterpillar and children will follow what I
read. It engages students in active listening. It creates
enthusiasm for reading. This text references the days of the
week and integers in sequences or patterns that are
recognizable. These patterns facilitate children's natural
reading and represent their own world knowledge. I will let
them recognize days and number while reading. After
recognizing, I will ask them where they find out and then
create an activity called " smash the board". I will write
some numbers and days on the board, invite from 6 to 8
students, and divide into two groups. For the first turn, I will
say aloud the days or numbers and the fastest person will
find and smash the right word on the board. A correct
answer will receive a good mark and the following turn will
be as follows. The next part is discovering the foods that
caterpillar eats. I will let them list it and then, present by
some visual pictures. After that, I will organize "
remembering pictures" game. This activity will assist
youngsters in intuitively and vividly learning and reviewing
food language. To do this game, I need to prepare pictures
related to the food vocabulary. I will have them look
through each picture once for about 5 seconds, then have
them write down the names of the pictures. The child who
can write more words wins.

For the next lesson, children will continue to learn about the
many phases of a caterpillar's transformation into a
butterfly. I will reread the novel, pausing between sections
to inquire about caterpillar's future. After the tale concludes,
I will display the plot map on the wall so that everyone may
observe what transpires in a book. The narrative map will
include three parts, and students will be asked what they
remember about each section. After discussing, I will show
them to watch a video about the life circle of butterfly in the
natural environment and ask them what they think about it.
To finish this lesson, I will let them draw a story map based
on what they have learn. By using a large paper, crayons,
and glues, I will support them to draw their own story map.
This increases their remembering ability and creativity.
When they finished, everyone will vote for the best version
of drawing and let them tell the story again.

After two lessons, children have knowledge about the days,

numbers and nutrition. For the last lesson, they will find out
the message of this story. Before mention the content again,
I will ask them what this story talks about and what they
think about the meaning. Based on this, I will explain what
the real message is. I will show them the video of eating
healthy foods and about the hope. I will explain to them
with each video that they should eat more fruits, vegetables,
and other nutritious things since doing so is healthier for
them, whereas eating too much sweet food may cause them
to have stomach pains like the caterpillar does. It even
conveys a subliminal message about hope. They need to
have hope. With your ability, they, a little, inconsequential
caterpillar, may develop into a stunning butterfly and take
flight in the world. After I complete it, I will plan an art
project. This means that the children will make their own
caterpillars out of paper circles and then colour them
whichever colour they like. Each of them will stand in front
of class and show their creating. After this, everyone will
receive a small gift from me, the teacher to encourage them
continue participate and show their voices as well as their
results.

Self-Reflection

Creating a literature-based lesson sequence is not easy thing for first year student as it requires various things to make an effective plan for students.
Literature-based lesson involves teaching reading through exposure to literature, including books, short stories, etc (Lessonsense, n.d.). Firstly, I do not know
how to begin and choose the story, but these guidelines help me a lot for choosing a good book. The book that I chose to use for these classes was vibrant,
and it imparted valuable information to the students. For example, it showed how a caterpillar might develop into a butterfly by showing how it transitioned
from being one thing to another by the time the story came to a finish. Moreover, it also provides some meaningful messages which are helpful for children I
feel this book is a great fit for the age group of pre-schoolers. Despite of a good book, I am sometimes in trouble of creating creative learning activities. As a
first-year student, I have not had any experience related teaching. This is the first time I have created this teaching planning. I ask myself a lot of questions
and put myself in the position of children that if I am the child, I will want to join what activity. Additionally, I also ask some questions for children that I
have talked to make an investigation. It is clear that this process influences significantly the way I think about the instruction and planning for literature-
based lessons. Although it is quite difficult, for some aspects, I realize that it is interesting, and more and more I want to become a good teacher. Overcoming
these challenges, I create several fun activities and the story map as a assignment in the class and for the students to take home to their parents to help
reinforce the assignment we are doing in class. These things will be essential foundations for my future educational career.
