Is 1856-1977 Specification For Steel Wire Ropes For Haulage Purposes

This document provides specifications for steel wire ropes used for haulage purposes in mines and other industrial applications. It outlines the different wire rope constructions, types, tensile designations, core materials, and size ranges covered. Tables 1-4 specify the nominal diameter, minimum breaking load, and mass for various wire rope constructions with fiber or steel cores ranging in diameter from 8mm to 40mm. Requirements addressed include terminology, tolerances, breaking strength, construction details, preforming, galvanizing, and marking.

2. Terminology - Refer IS : 2363-1965 ’ Glossary of terms relating to wire ropes’.

3. Rope Size and Tolerance -The size of the rope, designated as ’ nominal diameter’ shall be
one of those given in Tables 1 to 4. The aCtUal diameter.of the rope as supplied shall be within
2: percent of the nominal diameter.

1. Minimum Breaking Load-Shall be as given in Tables 1 to 4.

5. General Requirements-The wire ropes shall conform to IS :-6594-1977 ‘Technical’ supply

conditions for wire ropes and strands (flrsf revision) ’ and shall also meet the following requirements.

5.1 Core -Where a steel core is used, the construction shall be an independent wire rope (IWRC )
only.

5.2 Joints-- The joints in wires shall be avoided as far as possible, except where they are necessi-
tated by the length of the rope; those in the wires of the strand shall be distributed as wider; apart
as possible, and in no case shall more than one wire be jointed in any length of 10 m of strand,

5.2.1 The joints shall be either brazed or electrically welded. If joints are brazed they shall be
properly scarfed, if welded, properly annealed. Tucked joints shall not be used except.for wires
of 1’35 hrn diameter or smaller.

5.3 Lay - The.lay of the ropes shall be either ordinary Ia& or lang’s lay.

5.4 Mass-The mass of ropes given in Tables 1 to 4 arefor fully greased ropes. The ropes which
are not lubricated may be lighter.

5.5 Preforming - All ropes shall be preformed unless otherwise agreed to between the purchaser
and the manufacturer.

6. Galvanizing -When required, galvanizin shall conform !a Type B of IS : 1835- 1976 ’ Specification
for round steel wire for ropes (third revision B ’ unless specified otherwlzs by fh~ purchaser.

7. Marking - Refer IS : 6594-1977.

7.1 Cerfifkafion Marking - Details available with the Bureau of Indian Statidards.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This standard was originally issued in 1963 and was revised in 1970. The first revision of the
standard was necessitated so as to incorporate the changes experienced in the implementation of the
standard since it was first issued. I
In the second revision of the standard the fotlowing important changes have been made:
a) Scope of the standard.has been include the haulage wire ropes used other than
in the mines. Hence the title of the stan ard has been accordingly modified.

b) The following constructions of wire ropes have been added as it was found that these
constructions are now used in increased quantities.

i) 6 x 17 (8/8/l)
ii) 6 x9 (8/A)
iii) 6 x 23 (10/121A )

c) The requirements common to various types of wire ropes have been deleted and a reference
has been made to IS : 6594-1977.

d) Minimum breaking loads for wire ropes manufactured from steel wire ot tensile designation
1960 have been added.
