Cross Flow Heat Transfer Analysis

This lab report summarizes an experiment to determine the heat transfer coefficient of cross-flow heat exchangers. Data was collected on the temperature change over time of cylindrical tubes exposed to air flow at different velocities. Calculations were done to find the Nusselt number, Reynolds number, and heat transfer coefficient for each air velocity. Graphs were made showing the relationships between these parameters.

Introduction:

This experiment allows to determine the convection heat transfer coefficient and to investigate
for the variation of Nusselt and Reynolds numbers with the air flow past cylindrical tubes.

notations:

h: heat transfer coffecient (W/m2oC)

Nu , Re : Nusselt and Reynolds numbers respectively

H1 : velocity head (cm H2O)

V1 : velocity upstream of working section (m/s)

V : mean velocity past element (m/s)

M: cooling curve (W)

Data observed:

Some dimensions and properties refer to this experiment:

Ta: ambient air temperature = 30oC

Pa: ambient air pressure = 90 kPa

d: diameter of element = 0.01242 m

L: length of element = 0.0951 m

L1: effective length of element = L + 0.0084 = 0.1035 m

A: surface area of element = πdL = 0.00371 m2

A1: effective surface area of element = πdL1 = 0.00404 m2

m: mass of element = 0.1093 kg

Cp: specific heat of copper element = 380 J/kgoC

ρ: density of air at Ta=30oC = 1.1514 kg/m3

μ: viscosity of air at Ta=30oC = 186.016 *10-7 kg/m.s

k: Thermal conductivity of air at Ta 30oC = 26.522 *10-3
