Experiment 05

This document describes converting a galvanometer into a voltmeter with a specified range of 0-3V. It provides: 1) The theory that the galvanometer can be converted by connecting a suitable high resistance R in series, and the calculation to determine the value of R. 2) The apparatus required, including the galvanometer, voltmeter, battery, resistance boxes, and connecting wires. 3) Observations and measurements taken, including the galvanometer's resistance and figure of merit, as well as readings from the converted voltmeter. 4) The calculated series resistance of 4292 ohms required to achieve the 0-3V range for the converted voltmeter.

AIM

To convert a galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit)into a

voltmeter of a given range (say 0-3V) and to verify thesame

APPARATUS REQUIRED
Galvanometer Voltmeter of given range

Battery Two resistance boxes

High resistance rheostat Two one-way keys
Connecting wires Sandpaper

DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS
A an is used of potential between two points. It is
always connected
voltmeter instrument to measure the drop
in theconductor or of difference whose potential difference is to be measured in such
parallel to source potential
a way that the current enters it at the terminal marked positive
and leaves it at the terminal marked negative.

THEORY/PRINCIPLE/FORMULA
A be into a voltmeter by
connecting a suitable high resistance R in series as
galvanometer can converted
shown in the figure. The value of R required can be calculated.
If
1,
is the current for full scale deflection of the galvanometer then, we have

PRECAUTIONS
connections.
1. The ends of the connecting wires should be cleaned before making
2. The connections should be tight.

3. The e.m.f. of the cell should be constant.

4. The resistance box should be of high resistance range.

SOURCES OF ERROR
1. The emf of the batterymay change during the experiment.
2 Plugs in resistance boxes may not be tight and may have contact
resistance.

3. The resistance of the coils in the resistance box may not be same as marked.
